Our Curriculum

Classical Lutheran Education

Lutheran Classical Education is a rigorous method of study that links students with the past, gives them the tools they need for the present, and prepares them for the future. Good Shepherd Lutheran School will provide this type of classical education for members of our congregation and the surrounding community.

Classical education is divided into three stages: grammar, logic, and rhetoric.
Through the elementary years children are in the grammar stage. The focus in this stage is teaching students the rules and facts of every subject. Other unique aspects of this curriculum include:
A Christ-centered Worldview
Daily Worship
Phonics
Latin
Music Instruction

A CHRIST-CENTERED WORLDVIEW
Christian belief should permeate every aspect of life and not simply be evident on Sunday morning.
Accordingly, religious instruction at Good Shepherd will not be confined to a single class period, but every subject will be studied within the context of a Christ-centered worldview. Our students will behold the wonders of God's creation in science, witness His plans for mankind in history, study His order in mathematics, rejoice in His gift of music and the arts, and learn about His love and plan of salvation on a daily basis.

DAILY WORSHIP
We plan to have every school day begin by giving thanks and praise to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Chapel Services will be held in Good Shepherd's sanctuary (when available) where family members are always welcome to worship alongside their children. You are also invited to join us for Sunday morning worship at 8:00 am and 10:30 am with Sunday School and Adult Bible Study at 9:15 am. We also invite you to listen to our worship services, broadcast each Sunday morning at 10:30 am on KFOR AM 1240.

PHONICS
Good Shepherd Lutheran School will teach phonics in order to prepare students for reading. The English language is phonetic in nature. It is based on the recognition of letters and the pronunciation of sounds. Learning to read phonetically trains a child's mind to acquire language logically and naturally. Furthermore, phonetic instruction better enables children to understand the grammatical aspects of the English language.

LATIN
During the grammar stage, children are especially capable of mastering language. Since half of all English words have Latin roots, the study of Latin enables children to develop and understand a wider range of vocabulary in the English language. In addition, the early study of Latin facilitates the acquisition of skills for the learning of other foreign languages.

MUSICAL INSTRUCTION
Music education can unlock a child's ability to think, reason, and learn. Studies indicate that children who learn music at a young age become more proficient in other subjects as well. We will provide choral experience, where each child will perform, listen, and learn important musical works. Each child will be exposed to music derived from our rich Lutheran musical heritage, classical composers, and the American tradition.
