NEWS & NOTES
AUGUST 5, 2012
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service for coffee, juice, goodies, and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Poppe will be continuing our study of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John.
HOW TO READ AND STUDY THE BIBLE: This study continues in room 109 on the main level. Pastor Berndt will be leading this study.
MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: On Wednesdays at about 7:30 pm is a summer opportunity for midweek Bible study. The topic is, “The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel”. You can come for midweek service at 6:30 pm and stay to dig into God’s Word.
LIFE MOMENT: We can trust that the “Bread of Life” who gave Himself to satisfy the hunger and thirst of the soul (John 6: 35), will supply all that we need to support this body and life. Thus, even in the midst of great physical of emotional trials, we turn to the Bread of Life and not to our culture of death to be restored and satisfied.
COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES: The Lutheran Women in Mission will be collecting school supplies for Orphan Grain Train and for the local communities in Nebraska that are needing some help for their students. The ladies will be taking these supplies to the LWML Convention to be dispersed as needed. There will be boxes in the narthex where you can place your donations. The following items are needed:
12" rulers 24 ct. boxes of crayons Glue
Erasers 8 or 16 ct. boxes of markers Scissors
Pkgs. of Pencils Spiral Notebooks
Pkgs. of Construction Paper (multi-colored)
Thank you for your assistance with this project.
APPRECIATION: Thank you to everyone who has sent cards and notes, included me in your prayers, and has visited during my stay in the hospital. Your caring is much appreciated. Roger Wilkening
SUNDAY SCHOOL TEAM TEACHERS NEEDED: Team teachers are needed for several classes beginning with the fall quarter. For most classes the team teacher system will have you teaching for one month and off for one month. However, you and your team partner can work it out whatever way works best for you. If you have questions, need more information, or would like to volunteer, contact Marilyn Meyer at (402) 484-8599.
LAWNCARE: Joe Bokelman and Joe Reinke are scheduled to care for the lawn in the coming week. Thanks, guys! All our volunteers are much appreciated.
LUTHERANS FOR LIFE - BIKE FOR LIFE RIDE: Announcing the 2012 Bike for Life Ride beginning at Hope Lutheran in South Sioux City, NE on Sunday, August 12th and ending on Wednesday, August 15th at Brownville, NE covering approximately 198 miles of scenic Nebraska highways. The purpose of this ride is to raise awareness of life from conception to end of life issues and to raise funds to support the work of Lutherans for Life. Each rider gathers pledges and the funds raised this year will be used to purchase Life curriculum for the Lutheran schools across the Nebraska District. If you are interested in riding, accompanying the riders in a support role or financially contributing support please contact Rev. Jeffrey Bloom, 2012 LFL Bike for Life Coordinator, for more information at (402) 560-8529.
HELP US GO GREEN . . . HELP US SAVE GREEN: Last month Good Shepherd’s electric bill was nearly $2,300. With recent temperatures, next month’s bill will probably be as much or more. In an effort to reduce that cost we will be raising thermostat settings by a couple of degrees so plan accordingly.
We also need your help. All the thermostat settings throughout the church are preprogrammed. Please do not override the programming unless you are using an area that is not normally in use during that time. If you don’t think the programming is right, let John Olson or the church office know. Please turn off lights when you leave the restroom or if you are the last one out of any other room in the building.
Together we can be good stewards and reduce our energy usage.
OFFICE CLOSED: On Monday, August 6 the church office will be closed. We will check for messages, but if you have an emergency, please contact your elder.
FALL SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS: Fall teachers will be meeting on Sunday, August 12th at 9:30 am in room 107.
FALL CONCERT SEASON RETREAT: Lincoln Lutheran Choir welcomes new and returning members to the Fall Concert Season. Rehearsals begin with a retreat on Sunday, August 26th from 3-6 pm at Southwood Lutheran Church, 9300 S. 40th St. This season the choir will present two concerts: Saturday, Nov. 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont and Sunday, Nov. 18th at Grace Lutheran Church in Lincoln. This fall the choir will be preparing a concert of music focused on Praise and Thanksgiving. The choir will be directed by Dr. Kurt Knecht in his first season as Artistic Director and Conductor of Lincoln Lutheran Choir. Interested new singer please contact Sandie Anderson, choir board member at (402) 489-3948 to arrange an audition interview. The choir always welcomes new singers to join in sharing the sheer joy of singing with others.
