GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
SEPTEMBER 18,2011

“ . . . so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith . . . ” Ephesians 3: 17

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

“A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE”: Pastor Berndt is leading a new series of “A Summary of Christian Doctrine” classes on Sundays at 9:20 am in room 109. These classes are a study of the basic beliefs of the Lutheran faith as taken from God’s Word. Whether you would like to review the basics; find out more about what the Lutheran church believes, teaches, and confesses; and/or become a communicant member of Good Shepherd, this class is for you.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Poppe continues with the study of Genesis, chapters 1-11 with the account of God’s covenant with Noah beginning in chapter 9.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: For the next few weeks in Sunday School, the students will be learning the wonderful, true story of Joseph. It begins today with the account of Joseph’s jealous brothers selling him into slavery (Genesis 37). Though the brothers didn’t know it, God would use their treachery to bring about His plan to deliver His people and ultimately deliver us from sin and death through Jesus. A family discussion might focus on how hatred and unkind thoughts are sins that can lead us to hateful words and actions, as they did for Joseph’s brothers. Your children may identify with the brothers and also with Joseph. Help them see that though we suffer from our own hateful acts as well as the unkindness of others, on the cross, Jesus saved us from the hurt and harm of our own sins and the sins of others.

LADIES: All are welcome to attend the regular monthly meeting of Lutheran Women in Mission on September 19th at 7 pm. We meet in room 109. Hope you can come.

LIFE MOMENT: It may appear that the culture has lost its moral footing. We may fear the pagan culture is ready to absorb us. We may feel paralyzed and powerless to engage. But while God is doing his work, there is something we can do too. We can live. We can live as men and women eager to glorify God while He transforms the culture. Linda D. Bartlett, www.titus2-4life.org

LIFELIGHT CLASSES: There are two opportunities to study the New Testament book of Romans. Come on Wednesdays, following the midweek service (about 7:20 pm) or on Thursdays at 1 pm to room 109. A donation of $9 will cover the cost of the student guide.

MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: Everyone is invited to come to the fellowship hall at 5:30 pm for a study of the Ten Commandments from Luther’s Large Catechism. Midweek services will follow at 6:30 pm.

SCRIP GIFT CARDS: Let SCRIP help with some fall activities. Check out the church library (northeast corner of the fellowship hall) between services for gift cards for a multitude of merchants. When you purchase gift cards from the SCRIP ladies a certain percentage of the sale price will be rebated to our school and preschool. You can shop at Earl May for items to help with outdoor fall clean-up activites, Michael’s for materials to get you started on making your Christmas gifts, cards, and gift tags, or Marcus Theatres for a coming movie you would like to see. There are also gift cards for Barnes and Noble, Office Max, and Lowes. See the SCRIP ladies for more options.

SEPTEMBER NEBRASKA LUTHERANS FOR CONFESSIONAL STUDY: NLCS will be held on Thursday, September 29th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Refreshments will be in the fellowship hall at 9:30 am followed by Matins at 10 am. Presenter for the morning session will be Rev. Clint K. Poppe who will continue a series of presentations on CFW Walther’s “True Visible Church on Earth”, picking up at Thesis IV. The morning session will start at 10:30 am. The afternoon session will follow lunch. Presenter for the afternoon will be Rev. Scott Porath of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle. His topic will be, “The Unbiblical Removal of Pastors”. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm . Everyone is invited, both clergy and laity. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses.

THANKSGIVING DINNER: We are beginning to plan the 9th annual Thanksgiving meal for the Good Shepherd shut-in members and those members who are 75 years of age and beyond! It will be on Thursday, Nov. 17th at noon. We need help in several areas: making phone calls, arranging transportation for guests, providing transportation, helping serve the meal, and help with cleaning up. There will be sign-up sheets for food donations closer to the event. Please call Suzanne Kohmetscher at (402) 423-1263 to volunteer or for more information.
YOUTH EVENT: The annual Good Shepherd junior and senior high youth outing will be held on October 15th. This year we are going to try Vala’s Pumpkin Patch near Gretna. Meet at the church by 5 pm and we should return to the church by 10:30 pm. Anyone wishing to go MUST RSVP on the Facebook event, on the sheet at the information center in the narthex, or by e-mail to Marc (marchuff@gmail.com) or Andrew (wood.andrew.d@gmail.com). Cost for the event is $13 for general admission with various other activities available for additional costs. Check out Vala’s website for more information http://www.valaspumpkinpatch.com/ . This event is open to all students, junior and senior high. Parents, if you are willing to help drive to this event, also let Marc or Andrew know.

LAWNCARE: The lawn crew for this week is Brendan Schmidt. Thanks to all who have been so diligent in keeping up our lawn this spring - fall. You are appreciated!

LUTHER: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: Concordia Publishing House has released a graphic novel entitled, “Luther: Echoes of the Hammer”. It is the story of Martin Luther, whom God used to reform the Christian church and in the process to create the Lutheran Church. This format is focused on readers age 12 and up. If you would like to see a sample, go to www.cph.org/luthernovel where you can also play the game at no cost. If you would like to order a copy at the introductory price, please sign up at the information center by Sunday, October 16th. The introductory price is $12.99 which includes taxes and shipping or $11.99 if we receive orders for 10 or more.

HICKMAN UPDATE: The Good Shepherd Preaching Station in Hickman is up and running! Thanks to many, many helpers and volunteers, and the grace of God, things have gone very smoothly so far. The first two weeks there was an average of over 40 souls in attendance. Sunday School and Bible study are scheduled to begin this Sunday. Several different pastors will be leading the Divine Service there, but the same Jesus, crucified and risen for the life of the world, will be proclaimed each week.

The elders of Good Shepherd have recently met with several leaders from Faith of Our Fathers in Roca and it appears there is a strong desire to work together as the Lord unfolds His plans for a possible congregation in Hickman. Special thanks to all those who have made gifts for the preaching station, especially to St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Holland, MI for the beautiful paraments and to Dick Buethe for the gift of communion ware.

EDUCATING A NEW GENERATION OF LUTHERANS: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio. You can listen to teachings on topics like: The Vocation of Citizen, Jonah, Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers, St. Matthew and many more. You can listen on-demand at www.issuesetc.org.
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: St. Paul saw the hand of God in everything that happened to him. When he wrote the letter to the Philippians he was in prison, not for any crime he had committed, but rather for his bold witness to Jesus Christ! What an encouragement for us to stand up for our Christian faith by words and actions and be good stewards of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world!

DO YOU FEEL THAT GOD IS CALLING YOU INTO MINISTRY?: If you have found yourself thinking and praying about this possibility in your own life, now is the time to talk with Rev.
