GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

JULY 18, 2010

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet in the fellowship hall at 9:20 am today for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. This class is currently exploring the New Testament book of Colossians which was written by the Apostle Paul to the new congregation at Colossae. He writes words of warning about false teachers and false doctrine and also words of encouragement. Come and take advantage of the opportunity to dig into God’s Word.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: “God heals in the Jordan’s Waters” (II Kings 5: 1-14) was the lesson for our Sunday School students today. Students learned about how God healed a military leader from a foreign country. A topic to discuss might focus on humility and expectantions of God. Parents might ask, “What do we learn about God from this account? How does God provide cleansing and eternal healing for us?” If you have questions about where your child’s class is meeting during the summer, check with the information center.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: COLOSSIANS 1: 21-29: St. Paul knew full well that in Christ he had been redeemed from all his past sins and failures and equipped by the power of the Holy Spirit to live his life as a good steward of the mysteries and blessings of the Gospel. By God’s grace we are also called to freely and joyfully live our lives and use all of God’s blessings to honor Him and make life sweeter for others.

LIFE MOMENT: Even well-meaning service to Christ can become distracting from what is truly “necessary” (Luke 10: 38-42). When striving to affirm life, Christians can be distracted by well-meaning political or social agendas and fail to sit at the feet of the Lord of Life and be reminded of what is truly important as we deal with the life issues – the Word of Life.

MENS’ BIBLE STUDY: All men are invited to come on Tuesdays at 6 am for a time of exploring God’s Word and praying for one another. Pastor Poppe is leading a study of the Old Testament book of Jonah.

HIGHER THINGS YOUTH CONFERENCE: Teenagers from around the country gathered at Utah State University's campus last week to unite in one common belief: Jesus Christ died and rose again for them. More than 500 kids participated in Higher Things, an annual four-day Lutheran youth conference. The driving force of Higher Things is to learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ and worship together, said Sandra Ostapowich, Higher Things conference coordinator. She said the youth "eat it up." "They can't get enough," she said. Participants, who are mostly high school and college students, spend their time in worship services, workshops and teaching sessions. "They spend four days immersed in their traditions and in the gospel of the church, and they go home and it permeates their entire lives," Ostapowich said. The theme of this year's conference was "Given."The Rev. William M. Cwirla, Higher Things president, said workshop content can be divided into three categories - culture, hot topics and doctrine and scripture. Topics range from the Book of Isaiah to abortion to living as a Christian in a video age. In addition to these teaching these subjects, another objective of Higher Things is to help kids understand what it is to be Lutheran, Cwirla said. "What we do is to try to help them understand their Lutheran identity," he said. Lutherans' version of Christianity is "like a minority opinion in America," and that can make kids feel different, he said. Lutherans confess Christian faith in its "simple, primitive, early form," he said, adding, "We're biblical and we're also Christ-centered." By putting Lutheran youths together, they can network and see that they aren't the only youth in their faith, Ostapowich said. The conference slogan is "Dare to be Lutheran," and that is something Rev. George Borghardt, conference executive, said participants are challenged to do: "I dare you to believe that Jesus alone saves you. Not by what you did or didn't do, but solely by his death on the cross." Ostapowich said the style of worship isn't something people would expect teens to be interested in, but they are. Borghardt described worship forms as "traditional." "These young people gather around hymnals and sing hymns that their grandparents sang," he said. Cwirla said youth ministry is about passing materials like creeds and hymns from one generation to another, and that is part of the worship at Higher Things conferences. With this focus on traditional forms of worship, Borghardt said teachings and activities at the conference align with what every congregation does. He said when participants return home, they know the same songs and same principles. They also return to their congregations with a renewed energy, he said. But the activities aren't all worship services. Ostapowich said some kids played in a 100-person dodgeball game. The kids also spent time at the Fun Park. This was the first time Higher Things was hosted in Logan. The Logan conference is one of two Higher Things youth conferences this summer. There is a second "Given" conference in Nashville, Tenn., and Ostapowich said up to 1,200 attendees are expected there. She said they have two conferences to accommodate the number and location of Lutherans who want to participate in Higher Things. The high population of Lutherans in the Midwest means the organization always has a conference in that area. When picking conference locations, she said, conference coordinators look for facilities that can manage the number of conference attendees and activities, and college campuses generally provide what they need. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Higher Things conferences.

60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: Con & Alice Urbach were married on July 30, 1950. Please join their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in celebrating this special milestone with an open house on Saturday, July 24th from 2-4 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

MIDWEEK SERVICE COMMUNION: The next opportunity for the Lord’s Supper at the midweek services will be this Wednesday, July 21st at 6:30 pm.

PART-TIME JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Peace Lutheran in Waverly has part-time job openings for their new preschool and daycare ministry. Up to 20 hours per week, and up to 30 hours per week positions are available. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Director Haley Kindrex at pbdirector@peacewaverly.org. or call (402) 786-2345.

ISSUES, ETC: Today we hear Christ the therapist, life-coach, helper, or lover preached in many pulpits. How do these fall short of “Christ the Savior” presented in the Bible? Issues, etc. has a five-part series on “Christ Alone” with Dr. Rod Rosenbladt of the “White Horse Inn” radio show. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.

THE VICAR IS COMING!!: Vicar Ryan Seymour and family will be arriving in Lincoln the last week in July. They could use some assistance unloading the moving truck on Thursday, July 29th between 7 & 7:30 am. Their new address in 5624 S. 38th St. (It is very close to the church.)

YOUTH EVENTS:
A big thank you to everyone who made the Higher Things trip possible! We all had a great time and learned a lot. As one of the shirts at the conference said, “I went to Higher Things and all I got was Jesus.”

Next Sunday (July 25th) at 1 pm the youth will be cleaning the youth rooom and the upstairs area of the church. We’ll provide pizza in exchange for your help. If we have enough youth come, it will only take about an hour . . . if no youth come, well, we’ll see. Please contact Marc if you have a question at 890-9752 or marchuff@gmail.com.

The youth are looking into going to Schlitterbahn in Kansas City next month on the 7th. Schlitterbahn is a water park that’s very popular in Texas and just opened a new park a little closer to home. We’re planning to leave about noon on that Saturday, arrive around 3 pm, stay until around 8 pm, and get back home about 10:30 pm. Cost of the ticket for the park is about $25 and cost for supper will be about the same, considering amusement park food prices. There will be a sign-up sheet at the information desk and a Facebook even created for you to RSVP. We need at least 15 youth to go to make it worth the trip. Again, if you have any questions contact Marc Huff at 890-9752 or marchuff@gmail.com.

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION: Come join in the fun & adventures at preschool! We are now enrolling students for the 2010-11 school year. For detailed information call 423-7677 or log on to our website at www.goodshcpherdlincoln.org. and link on to school and then into preschool. LADIES: Y’all come to Lutheran Women in Mission (LwiM) on Monday evening, July 19th at 7 pm in room 109 at the church. We’ll have great fellowship, refreshments and Bible study. See you there.

NEBRASKA LUTHERANS FOR CONFESSIONAL STUDY: The July gathering of the NLCS will be held on Thursday, July 22nd at Good Shepherd. Refreshments will be available in the fellowship hall at 9:30 am followed by Matins at 10 am. Presenter for the day will be Rev. Rob Mayes, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Fullerton, NE. His topic will be “David Henkel and the General Synod Constitution: Division, Institutionalism, Theology and Implications”. The paper looks at the history leading up to the constitution of the General Synod in 1820, the division it caused primarily centered on early American Lutheran theologian David Henkel (1795-1831), and some implications for the LCMS regarding the new synodical constitution proposals. The morning session will start at about 10:30 am. Following lunch the afternoon topic, starting at about 1 pm., will be “ David Henkel and Holy Bapism: A Scriptural Apologia for Protestant Objections”. This paper examines the unique contributions of early American Lutheran theologian David Henkel on the Sacrament of Baptism. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm. Everyone is invited, both clergy and laity. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses.

FALL TOUR: The fellowship committee of St. Paul Lutheran Church is inviting anyone interested to join them for a fall tour to Indiana & Michigan. The tour includes a stay at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth, MI; a tour of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn; a tour of the Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN; and touring the Amish shops in Shipshewana, IN. If you are interested, please contact Ed Termuende at (712) 325-6984.
