GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
MAY 30, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We thank Rev. Luke Russert for assisting with worship this morning. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee, juice, and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: The Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5: 1-12) is today’s Sunday School lesson. Here Jesus explains in His Word that He was poor, hungry, sorrowful, hated, and rejected for our sake so that God would grant us His gifts and blessings. As you discuss this passage with your children, talk about how sin blinds us to trust in our own ways, riches, confidence, and influence, but that Jesus offers us all things through faith in Him. He alone grants us eternal riches and blessings. Point out that the Beatitudes are statements of fact, already true for us in Jesus, who in His love took our sorrow, trouble, and sin upon Himself that we might have a heavenly reward.
BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet in the fellowship hall following the 8 am service (about 9:20 am) for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Berndt will lead this class today in studying the New Testament book of Colossians. St. Paul writes words of encouragement and warning to this new congregation . . . and to us. Come and take advantage of this opportunity to dig into God’s Word.
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: (Acts 2: 14a, 22-36) Our Chief Steward Jesus gave His all, including His life, for our salvation. This great sacrifice on His part moves us to be sacrificial stewards who manage all of life and life’s resources in ways to give bold evidence that we are the children of God. God’s children are God’s stewards.
LIFE MOMENT: It is critical in our times to answer the Psalmist’s question, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm8: 4a). We have a Trinitarian answer. Man is the work of the Father’s hand, redeemed by the blood of Christ, and whom the Holy Spirit desires to call into an eternal relationship.
MOWING: Volunteers to mow for the week of May 31 - June 5 are Jason & Eric Prenosil. Thanks, guys!
SEMI-ANNUAL VOTERS’ MEETING: Good Shepherd’s semi-annual voters’ meeting will be held on Monday, June 21st at 7 pm. On the agenda will be the election of officers for those whose terms are up this year and a discussion and approval of the budget for the July 2010 - June 2011 fiscal year. All communicant members of Good Shepherd are invited to come and participate. Questions about this meeting or agenda may be directed to one of the pastors or Brent Stehlik.
ADAM MOLINE ORDINATION: Good Shepherd member Adam Moline will be ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry on Saturday, June 26th at 2 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Adam will graduate from the Ft. Wayne seminary this month and has been called to serve a dual parish in Hankinson, ND. The congregation is invited to share in this joyous celebration. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
VBS IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!: Thanks to all who have volunteered to make this year’s VBS possible. If you would like to help and have not yet signed up, please contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or 525-8981 or pattystradley@gmail.com. We can use your assistance in several areas. Even if you can only help for part of the week, we would appreciate your involvement.
This year’s theme will surely be memorable with the emphasis on the Reformation and the days of Martin Luther. Feel free to stop in each day June 7 - 11 to see what we are up to. The opening skits for “Here I Stand” each morning from 9 am - 9:20 am will set the mood for the day and are sure to please! The closing program will be on Friday, June 11th from 11:30 - noon and you are welcome to attend to see what the children have learned.
If you can help us out with snacks or items for crafts, that would be much appreciated. Craft items needed include magazines, extra scrapbook-type items (stickers, papers, ribbon, glue, etc.). The children will be making a “Coat of Arms” during craft time and could use the above items for this project. Please place any donations in the basket in the narthex. Also see sign-up sheets for snack items needed during the week. Thank you.
GOOD SHEPHERD NEWSLETTER: The newsletter for June 2010 has been sent by e-mail to those for whom we have an e-mail address. The rest have been printed and placed in the cubbies and folders at the west of the coat room. There is also a stack for visitors at the information center. A cubbie/folder has been made for each new member family. If you are a member and do not have a cubbie box or hanging folder, please let us know in the church office and we will see that one is made for you.
LUTHERAN CHURCH EXTENSION FUND (LCEF): Finding competitive rates for an interest-bearing, yet accessible, investment can be tough these days. Searching online brings up many choices, most through unfamiliar financial institutions - a prospect you may not be comfortable with in these uncertain times.
LCEF’s StewardAccount has an interest rate comparable to national rates, yet is invested in something you can take comfort in: your local Lutheran church or school. Investing in an institution you can trust takes the worry out of one part of your financial plan. For more information contact Brent Stehlik at 489-9395.
ISSUES, ETC: Is it up to you to reach God, to find God and to please God? All man-made religions teach this: but not Christianity. What have been the results of man’s attempts to reach God through Moralism, Mysticism and Rationalism? Join us for our three-part series on Man’s Failed Attempts to Reach God with Dr. Steven Hein. Listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.
STEPHEN MINISTRY: The PBS “Religion and Ethics” news show recently aired an eight-minute feature about Stephen Ministry. You can watch the video online on the PBS website at www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/tag/stephen-ministry.
ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION: Christ Lutheran invites you to come to the Ordination and Installation Service for James Chieng Riang on Sunday, June 6th at 2:30 pm (Note the change in time). There will be a reception following the service.
MIDWEST LUTHERANS FOR LIFE BIKE RIDE: The route and schedule of this summer’s Midwest Lutherans for Life Bike Ride has been set. Under the theme “Hills and Thrills for Life!” the ride will take place August 2-4, 2010 from Glenwood to Nevada, IA. This ride will be a rich life experience, a wonderful way to make some new friends, laugh (and suffer) together, enjoy some beautiful country, and raise some funds for a good cause: promoting the Sanctity of God’s gift of life. If you are interested in riding, driving a sag vehicle, or in supporting the ride through a donation of money or supplies, please contact Pastor Mike Reiners (Peace Lutheran Church, Grand Island) for more details. You can e-mail him at pastorreiners@peacelutherangi.org.
BRING GOOD NEWS TO LIFE - NATIONAL LUTHERANS FOR LIFE CONFERENCE: Worship, workshops, banquet, brainstorming sessions, prayer breakfast, and keynote address, “The Death Culture and Ways to Fight It” will all be a part of the National Lutherans for Life Conference held at the Tundra Lodge Resort in Green Bay, WI on July 23-24, 2010. You may register online at www.lutheransforlife.org. The Lincoln Area Lutherans for Life will pay the registration for a first-time attendee. If interested, contact Lyn Maaske at 421-7363 or Sandy Langemeier at 486-1361.
