News & Notes - May 23, 2010

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: Today’s Sunday School lesson taught the children that at Pentecost, God sent the Holy Spirit to His Church (Acts 2: 1-21). Now, through Word and Sacrament, God gives us His Holy Spirit to create and sustain saving faith in Jesus. Ask the children to tell you about what happened at Pentecost. Ask them when they received the Holy Spirit (in Baptism). Review the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed in your family discussions.

LIFE MOMENT: The tower of Babel used God-pleasing technology but not in a way that pleased God (Genesis 11: 1-9). The technology to cure disease and to enhance and prolong life is a gift from God. The misuse of this technology, therefore, is an affront to God. The Spirit of Christ enables the believer to discern between what one is able to do and what one ought to do based upon the Word of God.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet in the fellowship hall following the 8 am service (about 9:20 am) for coffee, juice, goodies and a study of God’s Word. Pastor Berndt will be leading this class today in studying the New Testament book of Colossians. St. Paul writes words of encouragement and warning to this new congregation . . . and to us. Come and take advantage of this opportunity to dig into God’s Word.

MIDWEEK SERVICE: The 6:30 pm Wednesday service this week will incorporate an opportunity to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

MOWING: Volunteers to mow for the week of May 23rd- May 29th are David Perrin & Adam Stehlik. Thanks, guys!

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: Good Shepherd’s semi-annual voters’ meeting will be held on Monday, June 21st at 7 pm. On the agenda will be the election of officers for those whose terms are up this year and a discussion and approval of the budget for the July 2010 - June 2011 fiscal year. All communicant members of Good Shepherd are invited to come and participate. Questions about this meeting or agenda may be directed to one of the pastors or Brent Stehlik.

ADAM MOLINE ORDINATION: Good Shepherd member Adam Moline will be ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry on Saturday, June 26, 2 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Adam will graduate from the Ft. Wayne seminary this month and has been called to serve a dual parish in Hankinson, ND. The congregation is invited to share in this joyous celebration. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

VBS IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!: Thanks to all who have volunteered to make this year’s Bible School possible. If you would like to help but haven’t signed up yet, we can still use more helpers so contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or 525-8981 or pattystradley@gmail.com. We especially need people to help with registration on Monday morning, June 7th from about 8:15 - 9:15. You would be greeting the parents and children as they arrive, ensure that we have all the proper paperwork and escorting them to their classroom to introduce them to their teachers.

This year’s theme will surely be memorable with the emphasis on the Reformation and the days of Martin Luther. Feel free to stop in any day June 7-11 to see what we are up to. The opening skits each day from 9 am - 9:20 am set the mood for the day and are sure to please! The closing program will be on Friday, June 11th from 11:30 - noon and you are welcome to attend to see what the children have learned.

If you can help us out with snacks or items for crafts, that would be much appreciated. Craft items needed include magazines, extra scrapbook type items (stickers, papers, ribbons, glue, etc.). The children will be making a “Coat of Arms”during craft time and the kids could use these items for this project. Please place any donations in the basket in the narthex. Also see the sign-up sheets for snack items needed during the week. Thank you.

LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDY; THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: The Apostle John begins his gospel with a prologue introducing the existence of Jesus in eternity and also the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, and follows His ministry on earth. John recorded many of Jesus’ “I AM” statements as Jesus taught his disciples. This week the LifeLight Bible study will meet on Wednesday evening at 7:20 pm and on Thursday afternoon at 1 pm. This class will then take a break for the months of June - August. Watch the News & Notes and VOICE newsletter for information about class resuming in the fall.

VBS CANVASSING: Volunteers are needed to help with canvassing the neighborhood around Good Shepherd following the 10:30 am service today, May 23rd. Stay after the late service or come back for pizza and salad, then head out into the area to spread the Good News. We have packets assembled and ready and plan to divide into teams of two or three. There are about four neighborhood blocks in each packet, so it’s not complicated or stressful. This might be a fun family project for an afternoon.

MITES PROJECT: Concordia Seminary, St. Louis Food Bank Relocation Project is receiving funds from LWML mites. Using the food bank can save a seminarian family up to $100 a month in grocery bills. This is one of the projects being funded by the mites donated through the LWML Mites. You can help by placing a donation in the large mite box in the fellowship hall.

RETREAT FOR MIDWEEK STUDENTS: Several congregations in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa (including Good Shepherd) will be sponsoring a retreat for youth in grades 5-8 at Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. This retreat will include opportunities for catechesis, worship, and recreation. The theme for this year’s retreat is “Holy Baptism, A Life-Giving Water!” Pastor Poppe will be leading sessions to reinforce the instruction from midweek classes. This retreat will begin in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 15 and continue through noon on Thursday, June 17th. There will also be times of worship consistent with historic Lutheranism. Many opportunities for recreation will include the use of a gymnasium for dodge ball, basketball & volleyball as well as use of their indoor, zero entry swimming pool. The outdoor opportunities include a football field, bike trail, picnic shelters, and open space for soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee, etc. Cost will be $85.00. All meals and overnight accommodations will be provided. For more information, contact the church office at 423-7639.

His topic will be, “Medieval Soteriology”. The morning session will start at about 10:30 am. Following lunch the afternoon topic, starting at about 1 pm, will be led by Rev. Ryan Loeslie from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Merna. His presentation will focus on the “Amt Theses” from Walther’s Church and Ministry. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm. The final Sunday of the Easter season, celebrated as Pentecost, was adopted by early Christians to commemorate the first great harvest of believers for Christ (Acts 2: 1-41). Thus Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian Church as the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and they gave their compelling witness about the resurrected Lord. Pentecost is a day of joy in the gifts of the Spirit as He still reaches into our lives just as He did to the crowds on that first Pentecost: through the apostolic preaching of God’s Word and Holy Baptism.
