GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
MAY 9, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: Today’s lesson was about the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11: 1-13). The children learned that our heavenly Father invites us to pray and promises to hear our prayer for the sake of His Son, Jesus. What things have you prayed about? How has God answered your prayers? Review what the catechism has to say about the Lord’s Prayer.
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119: 105
BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet in the fellowship hall about 9:30 am for coffee, juice, goodies and Bible study. Pastor Poppe will be leading this class in studying the New Testament book of Colossians. St. Paul writes words of encouragement and warning to this new congregation . . . and to us.
LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDY: This class will continue the study of the New Testament book of St. John. In this book, Jesus teaches that not all religions lead to the true God. In fact, Jesus makes the claim that He and only He can lead us to God. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14: 6) Come on Wednesday following the midweek service (about 7:20 pm) or on Thursday at 1 pm this week to learn what the apostle John through the Holy Spirit has to teach us.
LIFE MOMENT: Who has more influence on the Church: the Word or the world? Theories of evolution don’t mix with the Truth of creation (Genesis 1: 1; 27). Arousing love before its time (Song of Solomon3: 5b) is contrary to love that is patient (I Corinthians 13: 4), pure (I Thessalonians 4: 7; I Timothy 4: 12), and procreative. Although Satan wanted woman to be the mother of death, God directed man to name his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all the living.
GOOD SHEPHERD’S VICAR: Good Shepherd has applied for and has been assigned a vicar for the August 2010 - July 2011 year. Ryan Seymour is married to Sarah and they currently have a son, Caleb in second grade and a daughter, Hannah who is a preschooler. Ryan and Sarah are expecting their third child around the Fourth of July. Please keep these newest members of the Good Shepherd family in your prayers.
LETTER FROM OUR VICAR:
Pastor Poppe,
Thank you for the opportunity to have my vicarage with you and the saint of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. I am looking forward to learning and growing in Christ over the next year. It is my pleasure to accept the placement that I have been given to Lincoln, Nebraska at Good Shepherd. The quarter will end on May 21st and after completing the required course work my family and I plan on moving down to Lincoln the week prior to August 1st.
The time I was able to meet with you, Pastor Berndt, and Mr. Stehlik was such a blessing. Sarah also appreciated the time she was able to meet with your wives. I am very excited and even more thankful that the Lord sees fit that I be placed under your supervision this coming year. I am eager to learn and do what it takes to be a pastor in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and to proclaim only Christ and Him crucified. I am also eager to dig deeper into the Confessions. We have studied them but now I am looking forward to living them.
I am planning on coming to Lincoln the weekend of Memorial Day(May 29 - June 1 or 2). Sarah is not able to make the trip, too late in pregnancy, but my mother may accompany me. I think that I (we) will drive down on Friday and leave the following Monday or Tuesday so we can look for housing and more importantly worship with you on Sunday. Sarah and I have been looking at some housing in the area and there seem to be plenty of houses to rent.
Again, thank you for this opportunity during my vicarage. I am very much looking forward to this next year.
In Christ,
Ryan Seymour
ADAM MOLINE’S DIVINE CALL: Good Shepherd member, Adam Moline has received his first call to Immanuel & St. John Lutheran Churches in Hankinson, North Dakota. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: You can even volunteer online for this opportunity to work with the Food Bank of Lincoln. They are “family friendly” but youth under 16 years of age, need adult supervision. Volunteer times are prescheduled so contact Cheri Lawrence at 466-8170, ext. 106 for more information. You can also e-mail her at clawrence@lincolnfoodbank.org. Volunteers are needed for such tasks as: picking up donated food; sorting; stocking and repacking food; delivering promotional supplies; preparing mailings; and working at the LPS Emergency Pantry.

We are planning to play two games (about an hour or so) and then go to Pizza Hut by Westfield/Gateway Mall for dinner. Two games will cost $14, then bring money for pizza. We should be back at church by 8:30 pm. We do need a count for Laser Quest. We have to have at least 10 people participating and if we have more than 20, we have to let them know. RSVP to Marc (marchuff@gmail.com, or 890-9752 (phone or text) or at the Facebook event!
MOWING VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers to mow at Good Shepherd for the coming week are Matt Durr and Brad Armstrong. Thanks, guys!
WANTED: Volunteers to fill three important positions at the Lincoln Division of Orphan Grain Train. The positions that must be filled are the Lincoln Division Administrator, Wisconsin Style Fish Feed Coordinator, and Lincoln Warehouse Supervisor. Even though there is no salary for these positions, the joy and satisfaction of participating in the efforts of the Orphan Grain Train far exceed any monetary consideration. Please give serious, prayerful thought to volunteering for one of these positions. Filling these three positions is essential for the Lincoln Division to remain open and to continue participating in the worldwide humanitarian efforts of Orphan Grain Train. To volunteer or for further information contact LaVern Thomas at 429-9104 or “Swede” Glover at 450-9371.
DEACONESS CONSECRATION: Former member of Good Shepherd, Jane Obersat, was consecrated as a deaconess at Memorial Lutheran Church and School on April 25th, 2010. Part of her responsibilities at Memorial Lutheran include teaching English as a second language to the parents of some of the foreign students in the school, tutoring students, working in the library, teaching German, teaching women’s Bible study and an English as a second language Bible study. She reports that the family and Rev are all doing well. Rev. Obersat is teaching Latin and Logic and coaching girls basketball. Tommy is a preschooler and involve in karate. Maggie is in 1st grade (with straight A’s) and takes piano and violin lessons.
ISSUES, ETC: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lincoln Public Radio. Topics include: The Challenges and Joys of Motherhood, The Alleged Discovery of Noah’s Ark, The Ascension of Christ, The Lord’s Prayer, Celibacy of Priests, and more. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.
WAREHOUSE SPACE NEEDED: The Lincoln Division of Orphan Grain Train, part of a Lutheran non-profit worldwide humanitarian effort, is in need of economical warehouse space. Needed is a warehouse of approximately 4000 square feet. A loading dock is definitely a plus. At least a portion of the space needs to be heated and all utilities are needed. We presently pay $1,328 per month plus utilities, but need to reduce that amount significantly if possible. For further information, please contact “Swede” Glover at 450-9371.
ELECTION TIME REMINDER: The Board of Elders and Church Council would like to remind the members of Good Shepherd that there is a city ordinance (8.22.120) against the placing of any handbill in or upon any vehicle. This is rarely a problem, but people sometimes forget, especially around election time. If you have any
questions, please visit with either Pastor Poppe or Pastor Berndt. Thanks!
JUNIOR HIGH RETREAT: (for kids in grades 5-8) For years we have been trying to find a way to participate in the annual Camp Comeca Junior High Confirmation Retreat in Cozad. The dates of the retreat and the last days of school at LPS have made it impossible. Last year, Pastor Poppe began working with a group of pastors in and around Lincoln and Omaha to offer a similar retreat on this end of the state and later during the summer. We are happy to report that the details are being finalized for the retreat on June 15, 16, and 17th at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. This event will run from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday noon. There will be a pool, gym, and numerous fields available for fun activities, dorms for the kids to sleep in, and spacious meeting rooms for study and worship. The cost will be approximately $90 and will include lodging expenses and meals. For more information and to register, contact Pastor Poppe.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Transport yourself to a different time and place to learn the simple truths of the Gospel. Come on June 7 - 11 from 9 am - noon and discover what Martin Luther discovered as he studied the Bible. The students will learn these truths of the Gospel and an important part of history through the teaching, crafts, and music that makes Vacation Bible School fun and educational.
Please get your child registered early so we can plan for enough materials and snacks for the week. This is so important to planning VBS and making it a memorable experience for your child. Don’t delay! Register today! Please complete a registration form at the information center and place it in the box labeled, “VBS Registration” in the narthex. Please fill it out completely so that we have all the information we need to make this a successful and healthy week for your child.
If you would like to help with VBS, we are still in need of helpers in all areas. We especially need some volunteers to come on Monday morning from 8:15 - 9:30 am to help with first day registration and in guiding the students to their classrooms. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or at pattystradley@gmail.com.
If you cannot volunteer to be here during VBS, there are several other ways you can assist. Please watch for sign-up sheets in the narthex for donations of craft supplies, snacks, etc. that will be needed. Watch also for an opportunity for lunch, fellowship, and good exercise as we canvass the neighborhoods around Good Shepherd with our youth group and invite our neighbors to VBS.
You are also welcome to come visit us each day to see the reformation come to life and watch Martin Luther grow up.
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL: The Board of Parish Education would like to give our regular Sunday School teachers a break during the summer and is asking for volunteers (parents, grandparents, etc.) to volunteer to teach a Sunday or two during the months of June, July, or August. Please prayerfully consider spending a few hours with some of Good Shepherd’s students. The materials are user friendly. Some people like to volunteer in pairs or groups of three. This is perfectly acceptable. Watch for an opportunity to sign up and choose your date and age group. Talk to a fellow Good Shepherd member about sharing this opportunity.
THRIVENT MEMBERS OPPORTUNITY: All members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans have the opportunity to vote on how you would like Thrivent to distribute $1 million among the 10 nationwide Lutheran and non-Lutheran charities. (If more than 15% of Thrivent members participate an additional $1million will be added.) Among the ministries selected are LCMS World Missions and LCMS World Relief and Human Care. The amount each charity receives is based on the percentage of the vote that each receives. Members are eligible to vote online at Thrivent.com/choicevote. Record your vote before May 21, 2010.
LINCOLN LUTHERAN CHOIR: Lincoln Lutheran Choir will pay special tribute to mothers on Mothers’ Day by performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s splendid setting of Mary’s statement of faith: the Magnificat in D. Under the leadership of Joshua Norris, the concert will be enhanced by professional soloists and chamber orchestra. Additionally, “Voices of Hope” has been designated as our outreach partner for this concert. As we celebrate mothers everywhere, the congregation will be invited to join their voices in praise for some special and well-known hymns. A “good-will” offering will be received.
