GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
MAY 2, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you today in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
FLOWERS: The flowers today are provided by the families of our confirmands. Please pray for these young people as they renew their baptismal vows and take this additional step in their life of faith. Being confirmed today at the 10:30 am service are: Brook Benes, Autumne Berndt, Spencer Dorn, Nic Fitzsimmons, Emily Schreiter, Ben Simnitt, Kyra Stradley, and Anna Wilkens.
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119: 105 BIBLE STUDY TODAY: You are invited to meet for Bible study in the fellowship hall about 9:30 am today. Grab a cup of coffee and some goodies and a seat in the fellowship hall.
MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: Another opportunity for Bible study will be on Wednesday, May 5th at 5:30 pm in the fellowship hall. This class is taking a look at the Ten Commandments as explained in Luther’s Large Catechism.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: The key point of today’s Sunday School lesson came from the Bible story about the choosing of the seventy-two to go and tell others about Jesus. God chose the seventy-two to serve Him in a special task (Luke 10: 1-24). God places us in various callings, giving us opportunities to serve Him and share our faith with others. As a family, talk about the various callings (vocations) each of you have and discuss the opportunities God gives you in these roles to share your faith. Who in your life needs to hear about the Savior?
MIDWEEK STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!: There will be a special meeting of midweek students and parents following the service on Wednesday evening. Please meet in the fellowship hall about 7:20 pm.
VICARAGE ASSIGNMENT: Good Shepherd has applied for and received a vicar for the August 2010 - July 2011 year. Ryan N. Seymour was assigned to Good Shepherd at the placement service at Concordia Theological Seminary on Tuesday, April 27th. More info about his date of arrival , visit to locate housing, etc. will be coming in future News & Notes. Ryan is from Danville, IL.
ADAM MOLINE’S DIVINE CALL: Good Shepherd member, Adam Moline has received his first call to Immanuel & St. John Lutheran Churches in Hankinson, North Dakota. We thank God for this opportunity for Adam and his family and pray God’s blessing on this call to serve the Lord and the people of his new congregation.
LIFE MOMENT: The joy that comes from the risen Christ cannot be taken away (John 16: 22). This is not a feel-good happiness dependent on circumstances. It is a fruit of Christ’s Spirit, the joy of our salvation in Christ that circumstances cannot change or diminish. Many of the life issues we deal with today are “joy robbers” and present opportunities to share the joy of the resurrection.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: The volunteer opportunity for this week is Orphan Grain Train. Families, Bible study groups, youth groups or groups of friends are welcome in groups of at least 5 people to sort and box clothing to be shipped overseas. The warehouse is located at 2500 Kimco Ct., Unit 103 (just west of the viaduct on N. 27th St.). To schedule a time to volunteer, call LaVern Thomas at 423-3903 or “Swede” Glover at 450-9371.
CELEBRATION: You are invited to attend an open-house reception for Tony Schkade who is retiring after nearly 34 years in the registration office at UNL. Congratulate Tony on Friday, May 7th from 1-4 pm at the Regency Suite of the City Campus Union.
MUSIC MINISTRY: The adult choir and the Shine On Kids Choir will be taking some time off during the summer. We thank all adult choir members, Shine On choir members, Dayna Dorn, director of the adult choir, Judi Korte, who selects the music, Sylvia Yoder, who accompanies the adult choir, and Kristin Wegner, who directs the Shine On Kids Choir. We also take this opportunity to thank our faithful organists who volunteer their time and talents on a regular basis. A big thank you to Gloria Pospisil, Regina Engelhard, Sylvia Yoder, Cathy Nitzel, and Benjamin Woodburn.
YOUTH EVENT: Good Shepherd youth are going to Laser Quest on May 21st for a couple of games of advanced “tag”. Meet at the church at 5:30 pm or at Laser Quest at 6 pm to participate. We are planning to play two games (about an hour or so) and then go to Pizza Hut by Westfield/Gateway Mall for dinner. Two games will cost $14, then bring money for pizza. We should be back at church by 8:30 pm. We do need a count for Laser Quest. We have to have at least 10 people participating and if we have more than 20, we have to let them know. RSVP to Marc (marchuff@gmail.com, or 890-9752 (phone or text) or at the Facebook event!
MOWING VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers to mow at Good Shepherd for the coming week are Dale Borneman and Chad Johnson. Thanks, guys!
WANTED: Volunteers to fill three important positions at the Lincoln Division of Orphan Grain Train. The positions that must be filled are the Lincoln Division Administrator, Wisconsin Style Fish Feed Coordinator, and Lincoln Warehouse Supervisor. Even though there is no salary for these positions, the joy and satisfaction of participating in the efforts of the Orphan Grain Train far exceed any monetary consideration. Please give serious, prayerful thought to volunteering for one of these positions. Filling these three positions is essential for the Lincoln Division to remain open and to continue participating in the worldwide humanitarian efforts of Orphan Grain Train. To volunteer or for further information contact LaVern Thomas at 429-9104 or “Swede” Glover at 450-9371.
DEACONESS CONSECRATION: Former member of Good Shepherd, Jane Obersat, was consecrated as a deaconess at Memorial Lutheran Church and School on April 25th, 2010. Part of her responsibilities at Memorial Lutheran include teaching English as a second language to the parents of some of the foreign students in the school, tutoring students, working in the library, teaching German, teaching women’s Bible study and an English as a second language Bible study. She reports that the family and Rev are all doing well. Rev. Obersat is teaching Latin and Logic and coaching girls basketball. Tommy is a preschooler and involve in karate. Maggie is in 1st grade (with straight A’s) and takes piano and violin lessons.
ISSUES, ETC: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lincoln Public Radio. Topics include: The Resurrection According to Mark, The Hymn “Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands”, Effeminate Christianity, Procreation/Evolution and the Bible, and more. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.
WAREHOUSE SPACE NEEDED: The Lincoln Division of Orphan Grain Train, part of a Lutheran non-profit worldwide humanitarian effort, is in need of economical warehouse space. Needed is a warehouse of approximately 4000 square feet. A loading dock is definitely a plus. At least a portion of the space needs to be heated and all utilities are needed. We presently pay $1,328 per month plus utilities, but need to reduce that amount significantly if possible. For further information, please contact “Swede” Glover at 450-9371.
ELECTION TIME REMINDER: The Board of Elders and Church Council would like to remind the members of Good Shepherd that there is a city ordinance (8.22.120) against the placing of any handbill in or upon any vehicle. This is rarely a problem, but people sometimes forget, especially around election time. If you have any questions, please visit with either Pastor Poppe or Pastor Berndt. Thanks!
JUNIOR HIGH RETREAT: (for kids in grades 5-8) For years we have been trying to find a way to participate in the annual Camp Comeca Junior High Confirmation Retreat in Cozad. The dates of the retreat and the last days of school at LPS have made it impossible. Last year, Pastor Poppe began working with a group of pastors in and around Lincoln and Omaha to offer a similar retreat on this end of the state and later during the summer. We are happy to report that the details are being finalized for the retreat on June 15, 16, and 17th at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. This event will run from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday noon. There will be a pool, gym, and numerous fields available for fun activities, dorms for the kids to sleep in, and spacious meeting rooms for study and worship. The cost will be approximately $90 and will include lodging expenses and meals. For more information and to register, contact Pastor Poppe.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Transport yourself to a different time and place to learn the simple truths of the Gospel. Come on June 7 - 11 from 9 am - noon and discover what Martin Luther discovered as he studied the Bible. The students will learn these truths of the Gospel and an important part of history through the teaching, crafts, and music that makes Vacation Bible School fun and educational.
Please get your child registered early so we can plan for enough materials and snacks for the week. This is so important to planning VBS and making it a memorable experience for your child. Don’t delay! Register today! Please complete a registration form at the information center and place it in the box labeled, “VBS Registration” in the narthex. Please fill it out completely so that we have all the information we need to make this a successful and healthy week for your child.
If you would like to help with VBS, we are still in need of helpers in all areas. We especially need some volunteers to come on Monday morning from 8:15 - 9:30 am to help with first day registration and in guiding the students to their classrooms. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or at pattystradley@gmail.com.
If you cannot volunteer to be here during VBS, there are several other ways you can assist. Please watch for sign-up sheets in the narthex for donations of craft supplies, snacks, etc. that will be needed. Watch also for an opportunity for lunch, fellowship, and good exercise as we canvass the neighborhoods around Good Shepherd with our youth group and invite our neighbors to VBS.
You are also welcome to come visit us each day to see the reformation come to life and watch Martin Luther grow up.
LINCOLN LUTHERAN CHOIR: Lincoln Lutheran Choir will pay special tribute to mothers on Mothers’ Day by performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s splendid setting of Mary’s statement of faith: the Magnificat in D. Under the leadership of Joshua Norris, the concert will be enhanced by professional soloists and chamber orchestra. Additionally, “Voices of Hope” has been designated as our outreach partner for this concert. As we celebrate mothers everywhere, the congregation will be invited to join their voices in praise for some special and well-known hymns. A “good-will” offering will be received.
