GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
APRIL 18, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: Today in Sunday School, the children learned how Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples after Easter in another miraculous catch of fish (John 21: 1-14). As a family, talk about how Jesus reveals Himself to us in the means of grace, calling us to be disciples and giving us Easter joy. Especially discuss the blessings of Baptism and how through water and God’s Word each of us puts on Christ. What does that mean for you lives now and in eternity?
BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Since Pastor Poppe is doing a mission festival today, Rev. Luke Russert will be leading the Bible study on the short New Testament book of Jude. How is this book connected with the book of Colossians that we have been studying? Come for coffee, juice, goodies and Bible study in the fellowship hall at 9:20 am today.
A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE: Pastor Berndt will be finishing up this series today with the lesson on “Prayer and the End Times”. This class is a series of lessons outlining what Lutherans believe, teach and confess as it is taken from God’s Word. If you are interested in the whole series of 10-12 lessons on such topics as: God and His Word; God and Creation; The Fall, Sin and the Law; The Law: Its Purpose and Fulfillment; Jesus Christ, His Person and Work; etc. watch for this series to begin again in the fall.
LIFE MOMENT: The risen Christ confronts us with our sin as He did Saul (Acts 9: 4). The risen Christ changes our hearts and opens our eyes (9: 17-18). Like Saul, He calls us to be His instruments, pointing out sin and pointing to the Savior. When it comes to the life issues, changing hearts is a number one priority.
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: Revelation 5: 8-14: In this portion of God’s revelation to John he heard the shouts of praise because Jesus had died and rose again to make sinners part of a kingdom of priests who serve God. We are also part of that kingdom of priests, or stewards, who serve God with our wise management of all the God entrusts to us.
PICTORIAL DIRECTORY: If you had your photo taken or submitted a photo for the pictorial directory, your copy is on the table outside the doors in the rear of the sanctuary. Please pick it up and take it with you.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Transport yourself to a different time and place to learn the simple truths of the Gospel. Come discover what Martin Luther discovered as he studied the Bible. The students will learn these truths of the Gospel and an important part of history through the teaching, crafts, and music that makes Vacation Bible School fun and educational.
Please get your child registered early so we can plan for enough materials and snacks for the week. This is so important to planning VBS and making it a memorable experience for your child. Don’t delay! Register today! Please complete a registration form at the information center and place it in the box labeled, “VBS Registration” in the narthex. Please fill it out completely so that we have all the information we need to make this a successful and healthy week for your child.
If you would like to help with VBS, we are still in need of helpers in all areas. We especially need some volunteers to come on Monday morning from 8:15 - 9:30 am to help with first day registration and in guiding the students to their classrooms. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or pattystradley@gmail.com.
If you cannot volunteer to be here during VBS, there are several other ways you can assist. Please watch for sign-up sheets in the narthex for donations of craft supplies, snacks, etc. that will be needed. Watch also for an opportunity for lunch, fellowship, and good exercise as we canvass the neighborhoods around Good Shepherd with our youth group and invite our neighbors to VBS.
You are also welcome to come visit us each day to see the reformation come to life and watch Martin Luther grow up.
ELECTION TIME REMINDER: The Board of Elders and Church Council would like to remind the members of Good Shepherd that there is a city ordinance (8.22.120) against the placing of any handbill in or upon any vehicle. This is rarely a problem, but people sometimes forget, especially around election time. If you have any questions, please visit with either Pastor Poppe or Pastor Berndt. Thanks!
MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: You are invited to come to the midweek Bible study at 5:30 pm on Wednesdays. The class will be looking at the Ten Commandments as explained in Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. This week we will focus on the Fourth Commandment.
SOUP AND CRACKERS SPEAKER: Hey, just where do the crackers, cans of soup, jars of peanut butter and boxes of mac & cheese go that were in our grocery cart? Who gives them out and who eats all that food? Please attend the LWIM (Lutheran Women in Mission) meeting on April 19th at 7 pm and hear our guest speaker, Scot Young, from the Lincoln Food Bank. He will answer these questions and tell us more about this worthy local mission project. This mission field is right here in our own backyard . . . right here in Lincoln.
LOST AND FOUND: Several items of jewelry have been turned in to the office recently. They have been placed in a small box and located at the information center. If you are missing one of a pair of earrings, some charms from a bracelet, etc., please check out the box at the info center.
JUNIOR HIGH RETREAT: (for kids in grades 5-8) For years we have been trying to find a way to participate in the annual Camp Comeca Junior High Confirmation Retreat in Cozad. The dates of the retreat and the last days of school at LPS have made it impossible. Last year, Pastor Poppe began working with a group of pastors in and around Lincoln and Omaha to offer a similar retreat on this end of the state and later during the summer. We are happy to report that the details are being finalized for the retreat on June 15, 16, and 17th at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. This event will run from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday noon. There will be a pool, gym, and numerous fields available for fun activities, dorms for the kids to sleep in, and spacious meeting rooms for study and worship. The cost will be approximately $90 and will include lodging expenses and meals. For more information and to register, contact Pastor Poppe.
HIGHER THINGS: Got Higher Things? Higher Things is a Lutheran magazine for youth. It is a wealth of information on everything from faith to films. Develop a Lutheran worldview: dare to be Lutheran! A gift subscription to Higher Things would be perfect for a new confirmand or graduate. Group subscriptions are only $12. Individual subscriptions are $15. Go to higherthings.org or call toll free 1-888-448-2359 for more information.
LUTHERAN LAYMEN’S LEAGUE RALLY: The Lutheran Laymen’s League will have its spring rally at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2001 S. 11th St. On Sunday, April 25th with registration beginning at 3:30 pm followed by the program at 4 pm. The speaker will be Rev. Dr. James Hoke, retired military chaplain. The cost of the day including dinner is $10 per person. For reservations, call 489-5423 or 423-3903.
LINCOLN LUTHERAN CHOIR: Lincoln Lutheran Choir will pay special tribute to mothers on Mothers’ Day by performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s splendid setting of Mary’s statement of faith: the Magnificat in D. Under the leadership of Joshua Norris, the concert will be enhanced by professional soloists and chamber orchestra. Additionally, “Voices of Hope” has been designated as our outreach partner for this concert. As we celebrate mothers everywhere, the congregation will be invited to join their voices in praise for some special and well-known hymns. A “good-will” offering will be received.
