GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
MARCH 21, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. We thank Rev. Daniel Preus, Director of the Luther Academy, for his preaching of the message from God’s Word during the services this morning and for leading Bible study today. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Rev. Daniel Preus will lead Bible study today beginning at about 9:20 am in the fellowship hall. Come for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. Rev. Preus will speak to us about the state of Lutheranism in the world today.
A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE BIBLE STUDY: Meet in room 109 on the main level at about 9:20 am today. Today’s lesson is “The Office of the Keys and Confession”. This class is a series of lessons outlining what Lutherans believe, teach and confess as it is taken from God’s Word. Come for a review of the basics, to find out more about the Lutheran faith, and/or to become a communicant member of Good Shepherd. Topics of this series include: Prayer and the Last Things, Baptism, The Lord’s Supper, God and His Word, and more.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: In today’s Sunday School lesson students learn how in faith a sinful woman lovingly anointed Jesus’ feet. They also learned how in faith we grasp God’s free mercy, receive the forgiveness of sins, and respond with acts of love and praise. As a family, consider ways that you might respond to God’s mercy. Ask your children what sins God will forgive (all of them!), and in your catechism review, look at the section about the Confession of Sins.
LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDY: There will be no LifeLight Bible study on March 24 and 25 or on March 31 and April 1. The LifeLight study of the Gospel of John: Part II will resume on Thurs., April 8.
LIFE MOMENT: Paul calls his rather impressive pedigree “rubbish” (Philippians 3: 8). It was not rubbish in and of itself. God used Paul’s education and background to further His kingdom. But it was all rubbish compared to the “surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus”. Imagine being able to tell people that no matter what their background, health, physical or mental abilities they can have “surpassing worth”.
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: PHILIPPIANS 3: 8-14: As Godly stewards we are empowered by God to put past failures behind us and look forward to living our lives as God’s redeemed stewards.
EASTER EGG HUNT: Good Shepherd’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 10 am. If you would like to volunteer to stuff eggs or to help on the day of the event, please contact Debi Luebke at 770-5986.
EASTER LILIES: If you would like to purchase an Easter lily to help decorate the sanctuary for Easter, check the table in the church entry. The price of an Easter lily is $10. You may place your check in one of the envelopes on the table and deposit it in the decorated container also on the table. Feel free to take your lily with you following whichever service you attend on Easter Sunday.
PICTORIAL DIRECTORIES: For those who got their photos taken for the pictorial directory, your copy is available on the table in the entryway in alphabetical order. Please pick up your copy. If you did not get your photo taken but would like a copy of the directory, come to the church office to obtain one.
SPECIAL MEETING: There will be a special meeting of the Voters’ Assembly of Good Shepherd on Sunday, March 28th at the beginning of adult Bible study. The Board of Elders has called this meeting for the purpose of considering an opportunity for Good Shepherd to again become part of the vicarage program of the LCMS thanks to the generous gift of one of our members. The only business to be discussed at this meeting will be a motion giving permission to the Elders and Pastors to submit all necessary paperwork to request a vicar to begin serving Good Shepherd in the summer of 2010. Your attendance at this meeting is requested and recommended. If you are unable to attend please pray for this important business of the church. Any questions prior to the meeting should be directed to your Elder or one of the Pastors.
ELECTION TIME REMINDER: The Board of Elders and Church Council would like to remind the members of Good Shepherd that there is a city ordinance (8.22.120) against the placing of any handbill in or upon any vehicle. This is rarely a problem, but people sometimes forget, especially around election time. If you have any questions, please visit with either Pastor Poppe or Pastor Berndt. Thanks!
LENTEN MEAL: The last Lenten meal will be on Wed., March 24 and will be sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran School. The menu will include a spaghetti meal. Come at 5 pm to enjoy the meal. There will be a free-will offering to support the school.
SPRING CLEANING: Please come help us spruce up the grounds for Easter. We will be getting together on Sat. morning, April 3 at 8 am to clean up the church property for Easter Sunday. Join us if you can; we will take as much time as you have. Please bring gloves, rakes, snippers, etc.
SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR PARENTS AND TWO-YEAR-OLDS: You are invited to come to Sunday School with your two-year-old between services (about 9:30 am) in room 108 which is on the main level at the northwest corner of the building. There will be some time for singing, Bible story, crafts, and lots of playtime for the little ones and parent-sharing time for you. If you have any questions, check in at room 108 or contact the church office at 423-7639.
EASTER BREAKFAST: YOUTH SERVICE EVENT: Youth are asked to sign up on the door to the stairs heading up to the youth room to help with the Easter breakfast. This is the main youth group fundraiser! This is for ALL YOUTH, not just those involved in the Higher Things Conference. There are four shifts to sign up for: preparation on Saturday, set up, serving shift 1 and serving shift 2, and clean-up. Contact Corie Christiansen or Andrew Wood (wood.andrew.d@gmail.com) if you have more questions.
For the Higher Things youth, the more shifts you work, the more “credit” will be given to you for the Logan, UT trip. This is a great way to offset those costs!
SCHOOL DINNER/AUCTION FUNDRAISER: We are counting our blessings; almost 11,000 of them!!! Thank you to all who either donated, attended, purchased or prayed. We are so excited and thankful that the auction raised almost $11,000 this year.
The success of this event is dependent on you and we thank you! Offering a Christian education to our members and the community is very important to us. We also know that without the support of our church members it would not be a reality. This mission field is near and dear to our hearts.
We hope to see everyone again next year. Watch for a date in March of 2011. Thanks again for all you do to help out the school, staff, and students.
Robin Phillips & Nancy Stepp
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Mark you calendars for VBS 2010 “Here I Stand” focusing on the Reformation period and the life of Martin Luther. Please join us on June 7 - 11 from 9 am - noon. Children up to confirmation age are invited to participate. Anyone who has been confirmed is invited and encouraged to volunteer to
make VBS possible. We had a full house last year and need all of the help we can get! If you would be interested in helping with VBS, PLEASE contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or pattystradley@gmail.com. There are LOTS of areas that need help including kitchen, set-up, clean-up, designing props, music, classroom helpers, teachers, etc.
GLASSES COLLECTED: The box in the coatroom for the collection of eyeglasses has been emptied and they have been forwarded to the LWML Zone for distribution. Recyclable eyeglasses are still welcome for the “Mission Opportunities Short Term” project (MOST, for short). No prescription glasses except for single strength glasses, please. Bifocals and trifocals cannot be accepted. We can use sunglasses. Questions? Contact Helen Snook at 477-7321. Thank you for your previous donations.
ATTENTION SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS: You are appreciated! If you teach Sunday School at Good Shepherd, we would like to host a short luncheon in your honor on April 11th after the second worship service. Please make plans to stay and enjoy a meal in appreciation of all the work that you do. We will eat, relax, and have a short devotion. Praise the Lord for the work that you do to further His kingdom!
NEBRASKA LUTHERANS FOR CONFESSIONAL STUDY: The March gathering of the NLCS will be held on Thursday, March 25 at Good Shepherd. Refreshments will be at 9:30 am in the fellowship hall followed by Matins at 10 am. Presenter for the morning will be Rev. Jack Kirk, pastor of Bethlehem and Immanuel Lutheran Churches, Bremen, KS, speaking on the topic, “Social Justice and Justification”. Following lunch the afternoon topic will begin at 1 pm. The afternoon speaker will be Rev. Ryan Loeslie, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Merna, speaking on C. F. W. Walther’s “Church and Ministry” with a focus on the theses of ministry. In preparation for the afternoon topic, you may read the preface and first three theses. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm. Everyone is invited, both clergy and laity. A free-will offering will be accepted to help defray expenses.
