GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
FEBRUARY 28, 2010
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: The students learned today that as Jesus healed the ten men with leprosy, Jesus forgives and heals us from the sickness of sin and death (Luke 17: 11-19). Discuss with your child how in faith we respond with thankful hearts, praising Him for His love for us. Talk about what it means to be healed of our sin-sickness. How do we thank God for His grace? As a family, consider the words of the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed.
COLOSSIANS BIBLE STUDY: Meet in the fellowship hall today for coffee, juice, goodies and Bible study about 9:20 am. Pastor Poppe has been leading through the book of Colossians. Today we continue with chapter two. Paul sends both encouragement and warning to this young congregation . . . and to us.
A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE: Pastor Berndt leads this class on the basics of the Christian faith as taken from God’s Word. Meet in room 109 on the main level at about 9:20 am today. Today’s lesson is “The Holy Spirit and Sanctification”. This class is a series of 11 lessons outlining what Lutherans believe, teach and confess. Come for a review, to learn the basics, or just to find out more about the Lutheran faith. Topics include: Prayer, The End Times, The Lord’s Supper, Baptism and more.
LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDY: Though words about love are easy to say, they are very hard to back up with action. Genuine love always costs. As we follow John’s narrative about God’s plan of salvation and its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, we see in graphic detail what His love for us cost Him. How appropriate during this season of Lent to follow Jesus’ journey to the cross and beyond. Classes are held on Wednesdays at about 7:20 pm and on Thursdays at 1 pm.
LIFE MOMENT: There is much that insults us and assaults us in our world today. It’s easy being a Christian, but it is not always easy living as one. We are challenged because we uphold the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman or because we uphold the sanctity of life from womb to tomb, and the list goes on. But our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3: 20). Jesus protects His fellow citizens! We can “stand firm in the Lord” (4: 1).
STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: PHILIPPIANS 3: 17 - 4: 1: Paul warned to Philippians not to become so worldly that they forget about the more important spiritual things. As good stewards we are to manage all earthly blessings well, but never to lose sight of the more important growth of our faith through worship, Bible study, spiritual reflection and prayer.
GIVEN FROM THE HEART: Thanks so much to family, friends, the pastors, and especially our church family. A special thanks goes to everyone who participated in the benefit breakfast. It was so much fun, and great fellowship and the food was wonderful. We are so humbled by the support and kindness shown to us during Joe’s illness. We have truly been blessed.
In Christian love,
Joe & Nancy Velasquez
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Mark you calendars for VBS 2010 “Here I Stand” focusing on the Reformation period and the life of Martin Luther. Please join us on June 7 - 11 from 9 am - noon. We had a full house last year and need all of the help we can get! If you would be interested in helping with VBS, PLEASE contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or pattystradley@gmail.com. COMING EVENT: At the youth group meeting last Sunday, it was decided to go bowling next month. On the evening of March 19th the youth will go bowling at one of the lanes here in Lincoln. Time and location will be determined depending on league bowling times. Watch the News & Notes and the Good Shepherd Facebook group for more info.
EASTER BREAKFAST: It is time to start thinking about Easter Breakfast! Every year the youth of Good Shepherd set up, serve and tear down the Easter Sunday breakfast for the congregation. This is one of the youth group’s biggest fundraisers each year. Sign-up sheets are taped to the youth room door for each of the three shifts. Please sign up for one or more shifts. Requests for donations will be forthcoming.
HIGHER THINGS:. We currently have seven youth signed up to attend the Logan, UT conference from June 29th - July 2nd. The Higher Things youth will be assisting with the Lenten dinner on March 17th. Funds raised will be used to support the youth on the trip. If you would be willing to donate to the group, please call Marc Huff at 890-9752 or e-mail him at marchuff@gmail.com.

WHY LUTHERAN SCHOOLS MAKE A DIFFERENCE”: In a study by Milo Brekke entitled, “How Different Are People Who Attend Lutheran Schools (St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House; based on data compiled by Youth Research Center for “A Study of Generations”) he states as a part of his findings that:
* Students reveal less tendency to be anxious about their faith.
* Students are less swayed by their peers.
JUNIOR HIGH RETREAT: For years we at Good Shepherd have been trying to find a way to participate in the annual Camp Comeca Junior High Confirmation Retreat in Cozad. The dates of the retreat and the last day of school at LPS have made it impossible. Last year Pastor Poppe began working with a group of pastors in and around Lincoln and Omaha to offer a similar type retreat on this end of the state and at a later date. We are happy to report that details are currently being finalized. There will be a Junior High Retreat on June 15, 16, and 17 at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. The retreat will run from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday noon. There will be a pool, gym, and numerous fields available for fun activities, dorms for the kids to sleep in, and spacious rooms for study and worship. The cost will be approximately $90 and will include all lodging expenses and meals. More information will be available in the near future.
SOUP AND CRACKERS:
“Soup and Crackers” such a small gift to give,
but consider the nourishment to help so many others live.
Think of how the Lord has blessed each of us so richly in our lives,
then think of all the pangs of hunger and the little children’s cries.
Think of a young mother trying to make ends meet,
think of the father, losing his job and trying to get back on his feet.
Think of the meals you’ve eaten this week and how full your tummy has been,
then rejoice and say “thank you, Lord,” I’m so very able to help and be a friend.
Crackers and Soup such a sacrifice, how little it seems to be.
But not to the small family who could see Jesus in me.
Give - Give - Generously
Fill our cart with soup, crackers or any food you can give to the Food Bank
Thank you from the LWIM

GOOD SHEPHERD NEWSLETTERS: Newsletters are being sent out via e-mail as pdf files and printed and placed in cubbies and folders. The church office has recently updated our e-mail subgroups and is sending the newsletter by e-mail to those for whom we have a current e-mail address. For various reasons, the church office would prefer to send your newsletter by e-mail (uses less paper, notification of special events goes to this e-mail group, etc.). If you are receiving your newsletter in your cubbie or folder and would like to receive it by e-mail, please contact the church office and let us know your address. If you have recently changed your address and the church office does not have the most current one, please contact us. Thanks.
