GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

SEPTEMBER 20, 2009

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK: Pastor Poppe is preaching today at a mission festival in Martinsburg, NE. Both Pastor Poppe and Pastor Berndt will be attending a pastors’ conference in Ainsworth, NE and will not be in the office again until sometime on Wednesday. If you have need for the assistance of a pastor during this time, please contact the church office.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY:
“MY NEIGHBOR’S FAITH”: Meet in the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for a continuation of this study comparing what we as Lutherans believe, teach and confess as taken from God’s Word with the teachings of other Christian denominations and some major world religions. Plan to join us for an informational and interesting study of God’s Word.

“A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE”: Pastor Berndt will begin a new session of this class today following the 8 am service in room 109. (Follow the long hallway and turn right twice. Room 109 is the last classroom.) These classes are a study of the basic doctrines of the Lutheran faith as taken from God’s Word. Whether you would like to review the basics, know more about what Lutherans believe, teach and confess, or become a communicant member of Good Shepherd, this class is for you. Topics include: Creation, Law and Gospel, Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the Person and Work of Jesus, the End Times and Prayer in a total of 10-12 lessons. If you cannot be here for all sessions, please contact Pastor Berndt to make arrangements to receive all materials and get your questions answered.

MIDWEEK COMMUNION: The next opportunity to partake of the Lord’s Supper at the Midweek service at 6:30 pm will be on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

LIFELIGHT CLASSES: The LifeLight Bible study will focus on the Gospel of John this fall. We will pick up our study about halfway through the Gospel of John and continue with John: Part II. If you would like to join this Bible study and do not have a copy of the LifeLight student guide for Part I, please contact the church office and we will order one for you. The cost is $9 each for Part I and Part II. This study will begin on Thursday, September 24th at 1 pm. There will also be a session on Wednesday evenings beginning on September 30th at 7:15 pm. Come and learn from the words of the Holy Spirit as written by St. John.

PRAYER POWER POINT: Pray for God’s guidance in all decisions; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29: 11

ALL GOOD SHEPHERD SR HIGH YOUTH: We’re going to have a small snack/movie/planning party on Sunday, Sept. 27th from 3 pm to about 5 pm. Bring a bag of chips, cookies or something else to share; lemonade will be provided. We’re planning to have a short devotion, talk about what you want in your youth group, discuss how to organize it, then watch a movie. If you want input in what we do this year, be there!

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: James 3: 13 - 4: 10: Wanting more and more, especially of the material things of this world, can lead us into all kinds of spiritual traps. God promises to provide for our “needs” but not necessarily our “wants”. Maturing stewards know the difference.
FUNDRAISER: Good Shepherd will be hosting a fundraiser for Sam Malone on Sunday, September 27th. Sam’s cancer is currently in remission but there is great concern that the cancer will return since it has already done so once. Sam is currently undergoing an immune-therapy treatment program in Houston. This requires him to make multiple trips to Houston for the next year or so. Between the travel and the time his wife Marcia has had to take off work, there is a need for financial assistance.

Sam has been active with our Boy Scout Troop and the Scouts will help prepare and serve breakfast from 9 to 11 am on the 27th in the fellowship hall. Please plan to attend. If you are interested in helping with the benefit, or in helping with the planning, contact Patty Stradley. Sign-up sheets are available in the narthex for donations.

LAWNCARE: Lawncare this week will be provided by Rich Ollenburg & Eric Martin. Thanks, guys!

GOOD SHEPHERD PICTORIAL DIRECTORY: Thanks to all who have responded and had photos taken already for the directory. We have had a great response! Photo packages ordered during the first two weeks of appointments are available beside the cubbies in the narthex. If you have not yet been able to come in for a photo, please call Nancy Stepp at 304-3001 to schedule an appointment. We have scheduled three make-up days on September 23, 24 & 25 from 3:30-8 pm.
