GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
JULY 20, 2008
WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our risen and ascended Lord and Savior, Jesus. We invite you to join us for fellowship, coffee & goodies, and Sunday School & Bible studies following the 8 am service. Large-print worship folders and hymns for the day are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help you to locate hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located in the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.
SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDIES: Pastor Poppe will lead the Bible study based on the New Testament book of I Corinthians in the fellowship hall at 9:30 am. This book was written by the Apostle Paul to the congregation in Corinth. Paul wrote to address some of the issues that had surfaced in Corinth as he continued his missionary journey. Many of these issues are still stumbling blocks in congregations today.
A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE: Pastor Russert will be leading the final class for this series in room 109 at the northwest corner of the main level. The topics for today will be “Prayer” and “The End Times”. These sessions are a brief review of what the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod believes, teaches and confesses as taken from God’s Word. Completion of this course can also lead to adult confirmation and communicant membership at Good Shepherd. Watch for info about the next series of classes in the News & Notes this fall.
MIDWEEK SUMMER BIBLE STUDY: At 5:30 pm on Wednesdays, John Huff will be leading a Bible study in the fellowship hall. Come early for the 6:30 pm midweek service and study God’s Word. Various topics will be covered using the Good News magazine and God’s Word.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: Journey to Bethany: As Jesus journeyed to Bethany to preach about Himself, the one thing that is necessary, so also He comes to us with this same message in His Word and Sacraments - salvation is found in no one else. Luke 10:38-42
LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION: LWIM will be meeting this month on Monday, July 21 at 7 pm. All women are welcome to join in Bible study and refreshments. We would like to thank Jane Obersat for her service to our group as President and wish her and her family God’s richest blessings on their new adventure in Houston, TX. “Serve the Lord with gladness.” Psalm 100: 2
THANK YOU: It is difficult to put into words the gratitude we feel for our faith family at Good Shepherd. Your kind expressions of caring and concern are deeply appreciated. Thank you for the cards, letters, e-mails, phone calls, personal conversations, and visits. We also received gifts of food and labors of love, including picking fruit, weeding the garden, mowing the lawn, and maintaining the property, when we could not do it ourselves. It is very humbling to be the recipient of Jesus’ love through His people. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Also, thank you to the pastors and elders for their encouraging visits and messages, and for their many phone calls checking on Les’ condition. We are especially grateful to Pastor Poppe for traveling through the storms to be with us that first awful night in Sioux City. It was such a comfort to have him there, praying and encouraging us.
To all of you, we are most grateful for your prayers to our amazing God on Les’ behalf. Knowing he was continually being lifted up before our heavenly Father’s throne was most comforting of all. Someday, we will share with you some of the amazing things God did to protect Les along the way: from the field in Lyons, NE, on the life flight to Sioux City, and through the hospital stay and surgery in Lincoln. God is good! We humbly say “Thank You”.
The Family of Les Korte
LAWNCARE: Volunteers to mow, etc. this week are Jason & Erik Prenosil.. Thanks guys, for your time and effort.
ISSUES, ETC: The Issues, Etc. radio program is going back on the air. It was taken off the air by the LCMS Board for Communications Services on Holy Tuesday last March for budgetary reasons. God’s people have responded to that decision by raising tens of thousands of dollars to get the program back on the air under independent management. The show airs on weekdays, Monday - Friday, for two hours, 3 pm - 5 pm and on the internet at www.issuesetc.org.
NEBRASKA LUTHERANS FOR CONFESSIONAL STUDY: NLCS will be meeting on Thursday, July 24th at Good Shepherd. Refreshments in the fellowship hall at 9:30 am followed by Matins at 10 am. The presenter for the morning session will be Rev. Clint K. Poppe, pastor at Good Shepherd. His topic, starting at 10:30 am will be, “A Distinctively Lutheran Theology of Mission”. Following lunch, Rev. Robert Wentzel, pastor of Trinity Lutheran in rural Walton will lead the afternoon topic on, “A Lutheran Response to Pietism” from The Complete Timotheus Verinus by Loescher, chapters 15 ff. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm. Everyone is invited, both clergy and laity. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses.
A LIFE MOMENT: “What hope for Christians who suffer! When we are too weak to pray or do not know how to pray or do not know what to pray, the “Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8: 27b) We wait in patience for God’s will to be accomplished and for the ultimate redemption of our bodies. (8: 23)

LUTHERAN CHAPEL NEEDS HELP: At the University Lutheran Chapel we are in the process of collecting bikes to fix and then give free to international students. God has been very faithful as we currently have collected over 70 bikes which need minor repairs to be ready. We really need volunteers to help us fix these bikes. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to serve. Please contact Mark at (402) 613-4647 if you would like to help.
Pride slays thanksgiving; but a humble mind is the soil out of which thanks naturally grow. A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.
-Henry Ward Beecher, 19th century pastor
