GOOD SHEPHERD
NEWS & NOTES
MAY 6, 2007

NEW BIBLE STUDIES SCHEDULE: Beginning this week there is a new schedule for Bible studies at Good Shepherd. Pick a subject, day and time and join us for an exploration of God’s Word. There is some comfort, hope, guidance, and love for YOU in His Word.

FRI 8:30 AM Come and help with various projects (primarily preparing Sunday’s bulletins) then stay for a short Bible study on various topics.

CALL DAY AT THE SEMINARIES: Good Shepherd has two students who will be participating in the vicarage program from August 2007 - July 2008. In addition to these two students, our former vicar Andrew Ratcliffe has received his first call from the Lord of the Church as a pastor.

Mark Duer, member of Good Shepherd has been a student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne. He is currently studying in Cambridge, England. He has received a vicarage assignment to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pensacola, FL.

Kevin McReynolds, member of Good Shepherd has been a student for three years at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Last year Kevin was asked to postpone his vicarage because there were not enough placements that every third-year student could receive a placement. Because Kevin was doing so well with his classes, and because it would be less disruptive to the family, he elected to wait until his last year for his vicarage assignment. Pastor Poppe
also took this route when he came to Good Shepherd. This placement may or may not become a call in the future. Kevin and Amy and their family have been assigned to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Central City, NE.

Andrew Ratcliffe, former vicar at Good Shepherd has finished his last year at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. His first call is to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, IA.

For those interested, a print out of the vicarage placements and candidates called in the LCMS - Nebraska District is posted on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall.

THANK YOU: Thank you to those generous persons who provided lilies for the altar on Easter. The flower committee would like to also thank the Wegner family for the glorious arrangement on the altar. Our congregation is truly blessed with these gifts.

MEALS ON WHEELS: Serving on Good Shepherd’s Friday route this week will be Marvin & Joyce Thompson. Thanks for spreading God’s love to those in need.

Don’t miss out! Sign up today to serve our neighbors in need with a hot meal and a warm greeting. A Sunday route for Meals on Wheels is currently forming here at Good Shepherd. You would be in rotation with 5 (or maybe more) families/couples so would only deliver once every 5 weeks (or less)! A route only takes about 1 hour from 10:45 to 12:00. This is a great volunteer experience for all ages. This would be great on a college scholarship application! Please contact Patty Stradley at 783-5400 or pattystradley@windstream.net to sign up or to get more information.

P.S. Volunteers are also welcome on our Friday route.

QUEST FOR TRUTH - - JESUS: THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIFE!: Join us for a week long quest for the truth from June 18-22. VBS volunteers needed - Craft leader, Snack preparer, Snack time leader, Bible story leader, Bible challenge leader, Truth Quest guides galore! Please contact Kristen Wegner at 742-0233 or Patty Stradley at 783-5400 today! The kids are ready! Are you?

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Below are some important dates coming up at Good Shepherd. Mark your calendars and reserve the dates to join in on some fell0wship opportunities and an opportunity for some encouragement, the choosing of new leadership, and the teaching of our young people from God’s Word.

These items can be dropped off and marked “SALE” on the outside of the bag or box. Items may be put in the basement hallway across from the drinking fountains. Signs are posted. If you would like a certain price marked on an item, feel free to do so.

If you need help with unloading items or need to have them picked up from your home, please contact Julie Schmidt at 421-3922 or Cindy Dull at 421- 8466.

Notes on the Divine Service:
In the Divine Service, the Lord comes to us in His Word and Sacrament to bless and enliven us with His gifts. The Service is not something we do for God, but His service to us received in faith. The liturgy is God’s work. He gives, we receive. In continuity with prophets, apostles and evangelists, the pastor stands in our midst to deliver the Lord’s Law and Gospel in the sermon. He is God’s mouth for the congregation as through him the Good Shepherd’s voice sounds forth to call, gather, and enlighten His flock.

WISCONSIN FISH FEED: Look for sign-up sheets in the narthex for providing salads or desserts and for volunteering to assist. The fish feed will be on May 20th from 11: 00 am - 1 pm. Join in the celebration of Pastor Poppe’s 10th year at Good Shepherd and support Orphan Grain Train.
