GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

SEPTEMBER 25, 2011

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Dr. Ahlman will be leading Pastor Poppe’s Genesis Bible study today. He will offer a theological basis for Luther’s “Flood Prayer” that we use in our baptismal liturgy in Lutheran Service Book. Pastor Poppe is at Zion Lutheran in Wurms, NE today leading a Mission Festival there.

“A SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE”: Pastor Berndt is leading a new series of “A Summary of Christian Doctrine” classes on Sundays at 9:20 am in room 109. These classes are a study of the basic beliefs of the Lutheran faith as taken from God’s Word. Whether you would like to review the basics; find out more about what the Lutheran church believes, teaches, and confesses; and/or become a communicant member of Good Shepherd, this class is for you.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: The account of Joseph continues in the Sunday School lesson for today. Genesis 39 teaches us that the Lord was with Joseph so that His people could be saved. The children will learn that Christ, a descendant of Joseph’s brother, is with us in every situation, earning our salvation from sin when He died and rose again. A family discussion could begin about temptations. Joseph resisted the temptation to do wrong with Potiphar’s wife but still suffered when she falsely accused him. Joseph served in Potiphar’s house just as we serve in our various vocations. God was with Joseph, and in Christ, God is with us in all situations of life, providing, protecting, and forgiving us.

LIFE MOMENT: “We must be willing to make the sacrifice and rearrange our lives to welcome that unanticipated beautiful new baby. We must pay the price in time, energy and often money, to care for that sick, elderly person. We must pay the price in time and energy to care for that child with Down syndrome. We must pay the price of work, money, and effort, to teach, proclaim, and enact laws that defend life. But, dearly beloved, with the price paid there comes great rewards.” Rev. Don Richman, Lutherans for Life International Representative

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: Christian stewards recognize that they are in the world, but not of the world, and to let their lights shine in a world darkened by sin.
LIFELIGHT CLASSES: There are two opportunities to study the New Testament book of Romans. Come on Wednesdays, following the midweek service (about 7:20 pm) or on Thursdays at 1 pm to room 109. A donation of $9 will cover the cost of the student guide.

MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: Everyone is invited to come to the fellowship hall at 5:30 pm for a study of the Ten Commandments from Luther’s Large Catechism. Midweek services will follow at 6:30 pm.

SCRIP GIFT CARDS: Let SCRIP help with some fall activities. Check out the church library (northeast corner of the fellowship hall) between services for gift cards for a multitude of merchants. When you purchase gift cards from the SCRIP ladies a certain percentage of the sale price will be rebated to our school and preschool. You can shop at Earl May for items to help with outdoor fall clean-up activites, Michael’s for materials to get you started on making your Christmas gifts, cards, and gift tags, or Marcus Theatres for a coming movie you would like to see. There are also gift cards for Barnes and Noble, Office Max, and Lowes. See the SCRIP ladies for more options.

SEPTEMBER NEBRASKA LUTHERANS FOR CONFESSIONAL STUDY: NLCS will be held on Thursday, September 29th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Refreshments will be in the fellowship hall at 9:30 am followed by Matins at 10 am. Presenter for the morning session will be Rev. Clint K. Poppe who will continue a series of presentations on CFW Walther’s “True Visible Church on Earth”, picking up at Thesis IV. The morning session will start at 10:30 am. The afternoon session will follow lunch. Presenter for the afternoon will be Rev. Scott Porath of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle. His topic will be, “The Unbiblical Removal of Pastors”. Meeting will conclude by 2:30 pm . Everyone is invited, both clergy and laity. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses.

THANKSGIVING DINNER: We are beginning to plan the 9th annual Thanksgiving meal for the Good Shepherd shut-in members and those members who are 75 years of age and beyond! It will be on Thursday, Nov. 17th at noon. We need help in several areas: making phone calls, arranging transportation for guests, providing transportation, helping serve the meal, and help with cleaning up. There will be sign-up sheets for food donations closer to the event. Please call Suzanne Kohmetscher at (402) 423-1263 to volunteer or for more information.

YOUTH EVENT: The annual Good Shepherd junior and senior high youth outing will be held on October 15th. This year we are going to try Vala’s Pumpkin Patch near Gretna. Meet at the church by 5 pm and we should return to the church by 10:30 pm. Anyone wishing to go MUST RSVP on the Facebook event, on the sheet at the information center in the narthex, or by e-mail to Marc (marchuff@gmail.com) or Andrew (wood.andrew.d@gmail.com). Cost for the event is $13 for general admission with various other activities available for additional costs. Check out Vala’s website for more information http://www.valaspumpkinpatch.com/ . LUTHER: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: Concordia Publishing House has released a graphic novel entitled, “Luther: Echoes of the Hammer”. It is the story of Martin Luther, whom God used to reform the Christian church and in the process to create the Lutheran Church. This format is focused on readers age 12 and up. If you would like to see a sample, go to www.cph.org/luthernovel where you can also play the game at no cost. If you would like to order a copy at the introductory price, please sign up at the information center by Sunday, October 16th. The introductory price is $12.99 which includes taxes and shipping or $11.99 if we receive orders for 10 or more.

HICKMAN UPDATE: The Good Shepherd Preaching Station in Hickman is up and running! Thanks to many, many helpers and volunteers, and the grace of God, things have gone very smoothly so far. The first two weeks there was an average of over 40 souls in attendance. Sunday School and Bible study began last Sunday. Several different pastors will be leading the Divine Service there, but the same Jesus, crucified and risen for the life of the world, will be proclaimed each week. The elders of Good Shepherd have recently met with several leaders from Faith of Our Fathers in Roca and it appears there is a strong desire to work together as the Lord unfolds His plans for a possible congregation in Hickman. Special thanks to all those who have made gifts for the preaching station, especially to St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Holland, MI for the beautiful paraments and to Dick Buethe for the gift of communion ware.
THE FAITH ONCE FOR ALL DELIVERED TO THE SAINTS: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE: Christians throughout Lincoln are invited to take part in the international 40 Days for Life effort starting on Sept. 28th and going until Nov. 6th. In addition to the 40 days of peaceful prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, please consider volunteering to pray for one hour or any amount of time each week outside the new Planned Parenthood facility. The NEW LOCATION of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic is at 5631 S. 48th St. (48th and Old Cheney, northwest corner). You can also pray at home whenever it is convenient for you. Please spread the word to others about this important life-saving effort. To sign up, go to www.40daysforlife.com/lincoln. LIFE CHAIN SUNDAY: WHAT IS LIFE CHAIN?: It is a peaceful and prayerful public witness annually in October by Prolife Americans who stand for one hour praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity and witness that abortion kills fellow human beings and that human life should be protected from the moment of conception. On October 2nd prolife Lincolnites will gather along O St. from 27th to 70th St. from 2:30 -3:30 pm . Good Shepherd members have been assigned the block from 53rd St. to 54th St. on the south side of O St. For information, please contact Sandy Langemeier at 486-1361.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: Are you driven to volunteer? Do you want a way to volunteer as a family? Do you have two hours every few weeks to give? Good Shepherd has a Friday route and a Sunday route for Tabitha Meals on Wheels. The more volunteers we have the easier it is to make sure we have someone to deliver the noon meals on Fridays and Sundays on our route. Please contact Patty Stradley at (402) 525-8981 or pattystradley@gmail.com for more information. We are in need of volunteers on both days.

CARING FOR BARREN WOMEN:

We do not have to look very far to find them: friends, sisters, aunts, cousins, daughters, and all those women we love so dearly who have never been able to give birth to a child. What do we say to them? How do we comfort them? What hope can we give them? Join Katie Schuermann, author of He Remembers the Barren, and Kristi Leckband, contributor to the website www.HeRemembersTheBarren.com, for an intimate discussion about the heartache of infertility and its effect on all of us.
