GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

AUGUST 28, 2011

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for coffee, juice, goodies, and Bible study. Pastor Poppe continues the study of God’s Word in Genesis, chapter 7 where we look at the account of Noah and the flood.

LIFE MOMENT: “I do not believe human society . . . ever has attained, or ever can attain, a high state of intelligence, virtue, security, liberty, or happiness without the Holy Scriptures; even the whole hope of human progress is suspended on the evergrowing influence of the Bible.” William Seward, Secretary of State for the administration of Abraham Lincoln

HICKMAN PREACHING STATION: Services are being held each week at the Hickman preaching station in the Legion Hall in downtown Hickman at 9 am. Sunday School and adult Bible study are scheduled to begin on September 11th. Please keep this opportunity to spread God’s Word in your prayers. Ask God to draw those who need to hear His Word to this place. If you have any questions, please contact the church office or visit the Hickman section of our website at www.goodshepherdlincoln.org.

MIDWEEK/CONFIRMATION CLASSES: If you were unable to attend the organizational session for midweek & confirmation classes with your student and would like to participate, please contact the church office or speak with one of the pastors. Classes begin this Wednesday at 5:30 pm and conclude following the midweek service about 7:20 pm. Students will need a New International Version of the Bible and a 2005 edition of Luther’s Small Catechism. All other materials are provided. Catechisms are available in the church office for $13.50. The Faith Alive NIV Bible is also available for $25.00 and the Concordia Self-Study Bible NIV is $37.00 in the church office.

MOWING SCHEDULE: Thank you to all our volunteers who have been and will be helping with the upkeep on our lawn this summer and into the fall. This week our lawn crew will be Dale Borneman and Rich Lichtenfeld.

ARE YOU MISSING fun and fellowship? Would you like to enjoy getting to know your brothers and sister in Christ better? The LAFF (Lutheran Adult Fun & Fellowship) group is coming back. If you are interested in participating, please sign the sheets on the table in the narthex. There are separate sheets for young couples, not-so-young couples, singles, etc.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: Romans 12:9 - 21: Christian stewards are people who are joyful in hope, patient in affliction and patient in prayer. We lovingly practice Christian hospitality and share with people in need. Jesus told us that “others will know we are Christian by our love”. What we say and do as God’s stewards really does make a difference. How we use our resources, whatever they may be, makes a powerful witness to our love for Jesus who first loved us.

CHRIST-CENTERED, CROSS-FOCUSED TALK RADIO: Do any of these subjects interest you? The Pharisee and the Tax Collector, Church Discipline, Moses, Joshua, The Martyrdom of John the Baptist, 6th Century Bishop Gregory the Great and more. Issues, Etc. is a talk radio show produced by Lutheran Public Radio and hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken. You can listen at your convenience at www.issuesetc.org.

THE SEYMOUR FAMILY: Former vicar Ryan Seymour is safely settled in Ft. Wayne and looking forward to the completion of his seminary days. If you would like to send notes of encouragement, birthday cards (Sarah’s birthday is Sept. 29th), etc. their new address is:
5602 Northcrest Dr.
Ft. Wayne, IN 46825

♡ Thank you to the pastors and vicar for your visits to the hospital. Also, thanks for the many cards and prayers from everyone.
Con & Alice Urbach

♡ Thank you to everyone for their prayers for Ron’s father, Paul. We all know that he is now in a better place and without any pain.
Ron and Janet Amack

♡ Barb and I would like to express our deepest thanks and gratitude for the many expressions of support, encouragement, and comfort these past few weeks. Barb’s father’s final illness caught the family by surprise and his passing was quite unexpected; your Christian love and kindness has made this difficult time bearable. We thank God for you.
In Christ,
Pastor Poppe
