News & Notes - August 14th, 2011Posted by Clint Poppe on 08/14/2011GOOD SHEPHERD NEWS & NOTES AUGUST 14, 2011 WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again. BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for coffee, juice, goodies, and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Poppe continues with the study of the first eleven chapters of Genesis. Today we continue with the account of Noah and the flood. FLOWERS: Altar flowers today are given in celebration of the joining of Tyler Kapple and Kiley Wiese in Holy Matrimony at Good Shepherd’s altar yesterday. S. Lewis FALL BIBLE STUDIES Sunday: “A Summary of Christian Doctrine” in room 109 at 9:20 am beginning on Sept. 11th. Learn or review the basics of the Lutheran faith in a series of 10-12 classes. May lead to communicant membership at Good Shepherd. Tuesday: Men’s Bible Study on I Peter in room 109 at 6 am. Begins with brief devotion, refreshments and a time of prayer. Bible study follows. Wednesday: Midweek Bible Study on the Ten Commandments from Luther’s Large Catechism in the fellowship hall at 5:30 pm beginning on August 31st. Wednesday: LifeLight Bible Study on Romans in the fellowship hall at 7:30 pm beginning in mid-September. Martin Luther called the book of Romans St. Paul’s clearest systematic declaration of the Gospel. Thursday: LifeLight Bible Study on Romans in the fellowship hall at 1 pm beginning in mid-September. Friday: Short Bible study before folding bulletins for the coming Sunday services in the fellowship hall at 8 am. TEACHERS NEEDED: Please prayerfully consider getting involved in our Sunday School education program at Good Shepherd. We need all your talents. At this time we especially need a teacher for grades 5 & 6. To volunteer or to get more information, contact Marilyn Meyer at 484-8599 or Karen Radebaugh at 423-8565. RALLY DAY: Rally Day will be August 28th. All students will meet in the sanctuary after the 8 am service for music and fun with Pastor Poppe. Parents may pick up their children in their classrooms and meet their teachers. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MEETING: Our current Sunday School teachers and anyone interested in volunteering are invited to a Sunday School teachers’ meeting on Sunday, August 21st in room 107 between the services. TWO-YEAR-OLD CLASS: All two-year-olds and their parents are invited to the start-up of classes for tots. Jenny Roeder will be guiding this new program in room 108 at 9:20 am on Sundays beginning August 28th. We will have Bible story time and some fun surprises. SUNDAY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM: We are looking for someone to direct the Sunday School Christmas program for this year. If you have some talents in the areas of dramatic arts, music, etc., please contact either Marilyn Meyer or Karen Radebaugh as listed above. HICKMAN PREACHING STATION: In the services this morning, the donated hymnals for the Hickman preaching station were dedicated for this purpose. Good Shepherd will begin services in Hickman starting on August 21st at the Legion Hall in downtown Hickman at 9 am. Sunday School and adult Bible class are scheduled to begin on September 11th. If you have any questions, please call the church office or visit the Hickman section of our website at www.goodshepherdlincoln.org. MIDWEEK/CONFIRMATION PARENTS AND STUDENTS MEETING: All parents and their students who will be in grades 5-8 this fall and high school students who have not yet been confirmed are invited to an organizational meeting for the midweek classes on Wednesday, August 24th at 5:30 pm in the fellowship hall. Please plan to stay for the midweek service at 6:30 pm also. Some of the topics to be discussed will be the objectives and expectations of participation in midweek instruction, memory work, worship and Sunday School attendance plus other items pertaining to this opportunity for Christian education. Materials will be distributed, schedules provided, and questions answered. All students are asked to us a New International Version of the Bible and the 2005 revision of Luther’s Small Catechism. All other materials will be provided. If for some reason, you and your student are unable to attend this organizational meeting but you are interested in your student’s participation, please contact the church office at 423-7639 or talk with one of the pastors. MOWING SCHEDULE: Thank you to all our volunteers who have been and will be helping with upkeep on our lawn this summer and fall. This week our lawn crew will be Bryce Cuddy and Kevin Wagner. ARE YOU MISSING fun and fellowship? Would you love to laugh and have fun? The “LAUGH Group” is coming back. Watch for sign-up sheets in the narthex. LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION: All LADIES are invited to attend the regular monthly meeting of Lutheran Women in Mission (LWiM). We are meeting on August 15th at 7 pm in room 109. We look forward to seeing you there. “EARLY SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S”: Tabitha Health Care Services invites members of your congregation to include in your schedule a special presentation on “The Early Signs of Alzheimer’s” on August 10th at GracePointe Assisted Living and Memory Care Suites, 4620 Randolph Street. Space is limited so please RSVP by calling (402) 484-9888. LINCOLN LUTHERAN COMMUNITY CHOIR: The choir welcomes new and returning members to the Fall Concert Season. Rehearsals begin with a retreat on Sunday, August 21st from 2-6 pm at Southwood Lutheran Church. This season will include two concerts: Omaha on Nov. 19th at Pacific Lutheran Church and in Lincoln on Nov. 20th at Grace Lutheran Church. Music selected for these concerts will be representative of the English tradition from the time of the English Reformation to the present day. The concert will be conducted by LLC Artistic Director Josh Norris. Interested singers please contact Sandie Anderson, choir board member, at (402) 489-3948 to arrange an audition interview. PART-TIME POSITION AVAILABLE: Peaceful Beginnings Early Childhood Center, a ministry of Peace Lutheran Church, Waverly, NE is looking to fill a part-time day care staff position. Shifts available 7-9 am every day, 12-2 pm Monday and Wednesday, and 2-6 pm every day. Age groups may vary (toddler-school age). Shifts may be “mixed and matched” up to 20 hrs./wk. Pay: $7.25 - $10/hr. depending on education and experience. Applicants must be comfortable sharing their Christian faith with children daily. You can listen on-demand at www.issuesetc.org. THRIVENT TAKING DONATIONS FOR FLOOD CLEAN UP: The recent flooding in Nebraska has prompted local Thrivent offices to take action. Offices in Omaha, Syracuse and Lincoln will be collecting cleaning supplies to distribute to people along the Missouri River at various times in August. The items most needed are: Comet or other cleansing powder, Lysol or other liquid cleaner, bleach (1 gallon size), glass cleaner, scrub brushes, rubber gloves, sponges, paper towels and brooms/mops.
