GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

AUGUST 7, 2011

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Poppe will continue the study of the first eleven chapters of Genesis.

SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE CLASSES BEGIN: Pastor Berndt will lead a study of the basics of Lutheran doctrine as it is taken from God’s Word. This class is suitable as a refresher course in the basics and also if you would like to learn more about what the Lutheran church believes, teaches and confesses. Completion of this 10-12 week course can lead to communicant membership at Good Shepherd. If you have any questions, please contact the church office at (402) 423-7639 or info@goodshepherdlincoln.org or contact Pastor Berndt at pastorberndt@goodshepherdlincoln.org.
SUNDAY SCHOOL: We have combined classes for the summer and have given our faithful teachers a break while asking for volunteers to teach for a Sunday or two during the summer months. We are coming to the end of the summer and will be reshuffling our classes as the new school year begins. Regular Sunday morning classes begin on August 28th. Thank you to all the volunteers who have filled in for a Sunday or two this summer. We appreciate you.

HICKMAN PREACHING STATION: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln will begin worship services in Hickman starting August 21st. The “preaching station” will meet at the Legion Hall in downtown Hickman on Sundays with worship beginning at 9 am. Sunday School and adult Bible class are scheduled to begin on September 11th. For more information please call the church office at (402) 423-7639 or visit the Hickman section of our web site: www.goodshepherdlincoln.org.

NEW BANNER: THE SIX CHIEF PARTS: The banner hanging on the left is illustrating the Six Chief Parts of Luther’s Small Catechism. Beginning at the top of the banner . . . the first circle contains a person kneeling before the pastor and symbolizes Confession. Moving to the right . . . the hand of creation, the cross of Jesus, and the dove of the Holy Spirit represent the Apostles’ Creed. Thirdly, the chalice is symbolic for the Lord’s Supper. Next, praying hands stand for the Lord’s Prayer. Fifthly, the shell and three drops of water symbolize Holy Baptism. Lastly, the tables of stone stand for the Ten Commandments.
FLOWERS: The altar flowers today are provided by Morris “Moe” Huelle in loving remembrance of Velma Huelle. We thank him for beautifying our sanctuary today and bringing to remembrance all the saints who have gone before us into the mansions of heaven.

VICAR SIEBERT: Today we install our new vicar at both services for the August 2011 - July 2012 year. Please give him a Good Shepherd welcome and introduce yourself.

MOWING SCHEDULE: Thank you to all our volunteers who are taking care of the lawncare throughout the summer and early fall weeks. This week our lawn crew will be Brian Reetz and Nathan Keller.

TUESDAY MEN’S BIBLE STUDY: This Tuesday, August 9th, Pastor Berndt will begin a new study on the New Testament book of I Peter. All men of the congregation are invited to attend. The group meets at 6 am Tuesdays in room 109. The Bible study follows a brief devotion and a time of prayer. Coffee and goodies are provided; the study ends by 7 am.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING: Please remember SCRIP gift cards as you plan for your back-to-school shopping. The process is simple and will help to raise funds to assist with our school and preschool here at Good Shepherd. You simply purchase a gift card(s) for the merchant(s) that you plan to patronize in the amount you wish. Then just go shopping with the gift card and purchase what your students need. That’s all. The individual merchants will donate a certain percentage of the face value of those gift cards to the school. The percentage varies with the merchants from 2% up to about 15%. Check with the ladies in the church library (northeast corner of the fellowship hall) for assistance. Some of the participating merchants are: Target, Walmart, Shopko, Office Max, Office Depot, Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, J. C. Penney, and Old Navy.

ALL THEOLOGY IS CHRISTOLOGY: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio.
