News & Notes - July 31st, 2011Posted by Clint Poppe on 07/31/2011GOOD SHEPHERD WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again. BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Come to the fellowship hall following the 8 am service today for coffee, juice, goodies and the study of God’s Word. Pastor Poppe will continue the study of the first eleven chapters of Genesis with the account of Noah and the Flood in chapter 6 and following. SUNDAY SCHOOL: We have combined classes for the summer and are asking for volunteers to teach in order to give our regular teachers a break for the summer. If you would like to volunteer to teach a class for one Sunday or more, please contact Karen Radebaugh at (402) 423-8565. Thanks to all our volunteers. NEW BANNER: THE SIX CHIEF PARTS: The banner on the left is illustrating the Six Chief Parts of Luther’s Small Catechism. These are: The Ten Commandments, The Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, The Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession, and The Sacrament of the Altar. “All the chief parts of the Small Catechism are taken from the Bible, because as God’s written Word the Bible is the only final authority for Christian faith and life.” (taken from Luther’s Small Catechism, pg. 53) WELCOME HOME: Jordan Ernst and the rest of 134th Cav. will roll into town this morning about 9:30 or 10:00. THANK YOU: Thank you Pastor Poppe, Pastor Berndt & Vicar Seymour for coming to the nursing home to visit after my fall. It is very much appreciated. Edna Gade MOVING TRUCK: Vicar Seymour could use some help loading the moving truck! If you are able to assist for a time, please meet at 5624 S. 38th St. at around 9 am, Monday, August 1st. MOWING SCHEDULE: Thank you to all our volunteers who will be taking care of the lawn throughout the summer and early fall. This week our lawn crew will be Matt Durr & Brad Armstrong. VACATION: Jan will be on vacation through August 2. Sharon and Julie will be keeping things organized and assisting with your needs. Thanks for your patience during this time. VICAR FAREWELL: Please come this evening to wish Vicar Seymour and his family a fond (and fun) farewell and Godspeed. We will be having a potluck meal in the fellowship hall at 5 pm with much fun to follow. Please bring a main dish to share and if you last name begins with A-Q, please bring a side dish or salad; if your last name begins with R-Z, please bring a dessert. The Seymours will be returning to the seminary at Ft. Wayne for his last year of instruction (actually Sara says, it is only 9 months). Thank Vicar Seymour and family for their service this year and pray for God’s richest blessings in their continued service to their Lord and Savior. THANK YOU: Dear Pastors Poppe, Berndt, and members of Good Shepherd: Thank you for the recent care package sent our way! Snacks, mags, toiletries and batteries are not always easy to come by. . . especially for troops entering or leaving the area. The weather here has turned hot, dry and very windy. We are in the midst of what the locals call “the 120 days of wind” No kidding. The wind gusts from 10-30 mph, sometimes more, pretty much every day for May through August. We also have had no measurable rainfall for a couple of months. Most days the temps top out in the low 100s. The upside is that it isn’t muddy. Also the dryness and the wind combine to wick off our sweat so it actually is fairly comfortable/liveable. And at sunset the temps dip down very quickly into the 80s, then 70s, just perfect. We all feel safe in our location, which is largely a result of good relations with locals and diligence on the part of our perimeter defense forces. We have a new brigade supervising us; I’ve heard a soldier describe the general commanding that unit as a “knight in shining armor” (which means we feel he sticks up for his troops), and that’s a pretty common sentiment. And of course it makes our day to know that folks back home think about us, care about us, and send us stuff that we don’t always have easy access to here. Appreciation is priceless. ARE YOU MISSING fun and fellowship? Would you love to laugh and have fun? The “Laugh Group” is coming back. Watch for sign up sheets in the Narthex.
