GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

APRIL 17, 2011

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: Pastor Poppe will be taking a few weeks off from the Genesis Bible Study to focus on the documents from the ACELC (Association of Confessing Evangelical Lutheran Congregations) website. Please join us for a study of proper Lutheran doctrine and practice. A copy of Pastor Poppe’s paper entitled, “The Church’s Mission and Evangelistic Task” and also Pastor Daniel Preus’ paper entitled, “Pure Doctrine” are available on the table under the bulletin board in the fellowship hall.

Prayer - the world’s greatest wireless connection.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY: The Tuesday morning (6 am) Men’s Bible Study has recently concluded the study of Jonah. Pastor Poppe will follow up with the “rest of the story” and a study of the book of Nahum. Come for a look at this little-known minor prophet.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: On this Palm Sunday the Sunday School lesson covers Matthew’s account of the Passion of Christ as He ventured to the cross for you and me. The Father, the perfect, righteous judge of the universe, forsook Jesus on the cross so that the perfect, righteous sacrifice, Jesus Christ could be punished for the sins of the whole world. Talk with your children about the wages of sin (death) and the gift of God (eternal life) in Christ Jesus. Talk about the importance of relying on Jesus blood and merit rather than our own works for salvation as you consider Luther’s explanation to the second article.

LIFE MOMENT: Palm Sunday marks the beginning of holy week and we follow Jesus as He makes His journey to the cross. Of course, His journey to the cross started long before this. Based on the Epistle common to either emphasis this Sunday, one can argue that Jesus’ journey to the cross began in Mary’s womb. “But made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7). It was a fallopian tube, not the streets of Jerusalem the first welcomed the Savior on His way to the cross.

“HOW TO READ AND STUDY THE BIBLE”: Have you ever heard someone say about a portion of the Bible, “It’s just a matter of interpretation.”? Pastor Berndt will be leading a series of classes beginning in mid-May on Sunday mornings on the principles of Biblical interpretation. Watch the News & Notes, newsletter, etc. for more information in coming weeks.

MAKING BREAD: Good Shepherd’s Altar Guild needs more volunteers to make communion bread. It would be ideal to have two people per month. This month we need about 50 loaves so we have four people making and baking the bread. Please consider volunteering to help with this very important part of our worship services. Contact Suzanne Kohmetscher at 402-423-1263 or at momk54@yahoo.com.

PREACHING STATION IN SUTTON: April will mark the beginnings of an LCMS congregation in Sutton, NE. If you have relatives or friends in the Sutton area who might want to be a part of this new ministry, please pass on the information to them. The Easter Sunday service will be at the Filling Station (120 S. Saunders Ave.) At 11:30 am followed by a potluck. For more information, contact Rev. Marcus Mackay at (402) 831-1084.

LILIES: Easter lilies to glorify our risen Savior are available this year at the cost of $10 each. A sign-up table is in the narthex. Thank you.
Good Shepherd Flower Committee

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The school/preschool garage sale will be from July 14 - 16, 2011.

YOUTH NEWS: The youth are also serving Easter breakfast again this year. This fundraiser is for all youth, not just Higher Things students. We will have setup on Saturday morning at about 9 am. Then we serve after the sunrise service and between the 8:30 and 10:30 am services. Sign-up sheets to help out will be out on the upstairs door by restrooms. For those students going to Higher Things, signing up for more shifts will give you more credit toward the trip.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Christ Lutheran Church is looking for a replacement in the position of Bookkeeper. This is a 30-hour a week position, and involves processing receipts and payments, entering transactions on general ledger, processing monthly payroll, preparing budgets and reports, and working with employee benefit programs. The position is available immediately. Accounting experience is required. Contact Kent Weishahn at kweishahn@christlutheranchurch.org for more information or a full job description.

TALK RADIO FOR HOLY WEEK: You can listen to in-depth teachings on topics like: the Hymn “O Sacred Head Now Wounded,” The Institution of the Lord’s Supper, The Church’s Observance of Passion Week, The Hymn “Ride On, Ride On in Majesty” and more. Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org.

COOKIE SALES ARE HERE AGAIN!: All proceeds from the Eileen’s cookie dough sale will benefit Good Shepherd Lutheran School & Preschool. Orders will be taken beginning Sunday, April 10th through Sunday, April 24th in the narthex between services. Pick up date: May 15.
