GOOD SHEPHERD

NEWS & NOTES

NOVEMBER 14, 2010

WELCOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD: Good Shepherd welcomes you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Large-print worship folders and printed liturgy are available from the ushers. Ushers will also help with hearing assist devices for your audio needs. The cry room is located at the northwest corner of the sanctuary for your convenience. If you have other questions or needs, please stop at the information center. We invite you to stay following the 8 am service for coffee and goodies followed by Sunday School and Bible study. May God richly bless our time together and please come again.

BIBLE STUDY TODAY: We will take a 1 week break from our Genesis Bible Study as Good Shepherd member and Lincoln South Circuit Delegate, Dr. Matthew Phillips gives us a presentation on the LCMS Synodical Convention this past July in Houston. Thank you to Dr. Phillips for filling in while Pastor Poppe is on vacation!

SUMMARY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE: Come to room 109 on the main level at 9:30 am Sundays to learn more about what Lutherans believe, teach and confess as it is taken from God’s Word. Pastor Berndt is leading this 10-12 week course which can be a great review of the basics or can lead to adult confirmation and communicant membership at Good Shepherd. Topic for the day is: “The Lord’s Supper”.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY: Abraham was a matchmaker. Today in Sunday School, our children will study the efforts Abraham made to ensure that his son Isaac would marry a person who loved God (Genesis 24). This week, as you Grow in Christ during your family devotion time, read the list of blessings in the explanation of the First Article and identify the ones God provides especially through faithful Christian spouses. Thank God for the salvation He provides through His Son, Jesus.

COMMEMORATION ON ALL SAINTS SUNDAY: We inadvertently omitted one of our faithful saints in the commemoration last Sunday. Velma Huelle entered her eternal rest on December 6, 2009. We apologize to family and friends for this omission.

FLOWERS: The flowers on the altar today were provided by Lutheran Women in Mission in thanksgiving to God for His blessings and in honor of their newly elected officers listed below:
President: Sandy Langemeier
Vice President: Barbara Trail
Secretary: Sondra Rathjen
Treasurer: Regina Engelhard

MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY: Bring your students to midweek class and stay to study God’s Word at 5:30 pm in the fellowship hall. Currently this class is looking at the Ten Commandment and what Luther’s Large Catechism has to say about them.

LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDY: The LifeLight Bible study on the Gospel of John will continue this week on Nov. 17th at 7:30 pm. The Thursday afternoon class will not meet because of the Thanksgiving Dinner and worship service with communion on Nov. 18th.

LADIES, YOU’RE INVITED: Come to the November 15th LWIM meeting at 7 pm in room 109. You’ll be treated with Bible study, food and fellowship. See you there!

THANK YOU: Thank you for all the cards, visits, and many cards I have received during my recovery. They were so appreciated and I look forward to every one. Thanks also to our wonderful pastors and Vicar Seymour for their much-needed attention. I have been blessed to be a part of this Christian family at Good Shepherd. You are all very special. It is time to move on and I am very happy to be in Illinois with my family. When I get well enough I will come back to visit. I will miss you all.
In Christian Love,
Esther Schroeder
(Esther’s new address is: Champaign County Nursing Home, 500 South Art Bartell Rd., Rm. 215, Urbana, IL 61802)

LIFE MOMENT: So often death and evil seem victorious. Not so! Christ has won the victory and, when He returns, death and evil will be vanquished. We will “leap like calves from the stall” (Malachi 4: 1-3). In the meantime He calls us to be obedient to His commands so that we might avoid the pitfalls of sin (4: 4).

GOD’S LOVE AT CHRISTMAS: The Sunday School will be presenting the annual Sunday School Christmas service on Sunday, Dec. 5th at 4 pm. This year it is entitled, “God’s Love at Christmas”. In order to prepare, there will be several rehearsals. The rehearsal schedule is as follows:
Nov. 20th 9 - 11:30 am (1st - 8th grades)
Nov. 21st During Sunday School (9:20 - 10:15 am)
Nov. 27th NO PRACTICE
Dec. 4th Dress Rehearsal from 10 am - noon (Preschool/Kindergarten come at 11:30 am - noon)

THANKSGIVING SERVICES: We will celebrate Thanksgiving at Good Shepherd on Wed., Nov. 24th at 6:30 pm and on Thanksgiving Day at 9 am. The Lord’s Supper will be offered at both of these services.

MORE ABOUT THE DIVINE SERVICE: INVOCATION

Since Lutherans are trinitarian, we call upon the triune God to bless our time together in worship. The trinitarian Invocation also recalls our Baptism. We call on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in whose name we were baptized. “For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” (Ephesians 2: 18)
